Hitting New York...

Which is the best weekend during spring for salsa dancing in NYC ? The fares are cheap. I am thinking of a weekend either in mid April to late May. Excluding memorial day long weekend.

Funny you should post this. I just bought a ticket for NYC from May 18 - 25. I'm trying to catch the Jimmy Anton social on the 19th and Abakua on the 24th. The later the date the warmer the weather.

Is that the memorial day weekend ?

Are you coming out to Hong's tonight.

Great :)

Come on an Abakua/Salsamania/LVG weekend: April 12-14 or May 10-12.

Don't come the last weekend in April (April 26-28) because Frankie will be away at the MamboCity congress in London and the DJ that plays at the social when he is away is not good.

April 12-14 may be too soon. May 10-12 might be good!

I'm curious why you feel that way about the replacement DJ? What is he playing [or isn't] that Frankie doesn't [or does]?...

I've never been to Frankie's social. I can't give an opinion on what he programs personally or what anyone else there does. Gathering what you wrote about FMart's DJ chops when you told a poster to make sure he went there when FM was in town, it just seemed rather odd that Senor Martinez would have as a replacement someone that wasn't up to the standards of his event that regulars come to expect. Which made me wonder what was it about the DJ who steps in when FrankieM is not there that made you not appreciate as much as when the FRod spins.

Plus, just so I can know what to say when I run over there and tell him what you said... nyah! :p

Lol. The FRod? o_O

Short answer is energy. Frankie's music has a certain energy the other DJ's music lacks.

But Frankie is away rarely nowadays so fortunately we only have to put up with the other DJ a couple of times a year.

Will be arriving Friday morning and leaving Monday morning. I never been to the museums in NYC. Therefore plan to spend time checking them out during the waking hours!

Yo good seeing you last night!

One small critique that maybe you could pass along to the FrankieM. It would be 'greatisimo' if he could utilize live music to demonstrate his brand of 'Afro-Latin Funk'. I gather its a choreography of sorts, but would love to see him rip it freestlye, especially with a big band like the one that was performing last night. I bet you Bobby would probably be down to present something like that at the Manhattan School of Music. And the school will pay him tambien...

Yes great to see you last night :) it's been a while.

Do you mean you want to see him dance freestyle (non-choreo) solo, or with a partner? He did a bit of partner dancing last night but when he dances to a live band he tends to be more subdued as opposed to going all out. He wants to let the band get the spotlight, doesn't want to be center of attention instead of the band.

What I mean is to do his Afro-Latin Funkology to live music. All those body motions and expressions he does. Either as a soloist or with a partner. In a social context I can understand him wanting to be subdued. But I'm talking about a performance or exhibition like he did last night. The humble pie routine goes out the window when he's there to demonstrate his chops in a performance setting. I think it would be great if he could show the crowd the possibilities to live orchestrated music and really show the realtionship between body movement and rhytmical expression via the music. He doesn;t even need a big band. 2-3 percussionists would do. Guys like Pedrito, Roman Diaz or Little Johnny and go to work that way. I've always wanted to see dance instructors display their chops this way than the CD soundtracks. Not saying it was a bad performance by the Frankster. Just something that I want to personally see as a preference.

I see what you mean. You want a Frankie night as opposed to a band night. Yes, something like that would be very nice. :) Doubt it will happen as his solo appearances over the last couple of years have been rare, he is very focused on his dance company.

I'm not perceiving it as one over another. More like complimentary to each other. It's not that the band wouldn't shine if Frankie were to do his Afro-Latin Funk routine to live music. It's just to exhibit what Bobby was describing yesterday with regards to Bomba for example. How the drummers play according to what the dancer is doing. And then vice versa in Rumba. The relationship between dancer and music, which was the theme of that guy [I can't remember his name] who put it together's program.

Well that sucks!...

You can make it happen Sabrosura. If anybody can, you can... :D
