Covid dance poll

A great salsa venue opened near you, no masks no social distancing required, would you go?

I am very surprised they folded so quickly and gave into the legal threats.

But this is like schadenfreude! :D

More interesting would if the hosts themselves read the statement :p that would be cherry on the icing

Search it on YouTube. Some hosts have been reading it. OAN was the last to hold out. I think they still sue them.

My uncle called COVID-19 a ‘hoax.’ He’s quiet now that my grandfather is dying of it

Just before the 2020 election, my uncle had a big argument with my grandfather.

To my grandfather’s shock and horror, my uncle insisted that the coronaviruswas no worse than the flu. He falsely claimed the death toll was inflated — all a hoax designed to deprive Americans of our freedom and impose far-reaching tyranny.

Three months later, both my grandparents are struggling for their lives against the virus.

I happened to watch Carlson Trucker, one of the Fox hosts rant on why Jill Biden using Doctor as honorific title will confuse people and he had this strawman setup of her being a physician treating you in emergency situation.

It is hilarious the how they clutch at the straws to create controversies and conspiracy theories on the Fox all the time.

I think there is a pic of Salsaforum member in this article :)

If only he knew that he's actually enabling bill gates' population control plan :p by making it so easy for the virus to get him. I think that's a good strategy to get these people to change their mind: tell them that they're doing exactly what bill gates wants them to do, by not wearing masks and not following any covid safety guidelines they're making it easier for him to reach his secret population control plans :p The anti-maskers and antivaxxers need to be told the truth!

But if you look at other poor countries in Africa and Latin America those are not that affected.

New article discussing how 1) Covid cases and deaths in Africa have been severely underreported, and 2) that the pandemic is now striking Africa much harder.

A few disclaimers:

I have read many articles with so called experts always quoted as saying the actual death rate would be higher in poorer countries. Ofcourse it would be higher! They have poorer infrastructure. Both to provide required care and the mechanism to count deaths. Attributing deaths to a cause is not robust in developing world. In addition most of the poor countries have far higher density of population. Therefore would it be a surprise if they have higher death tolls than reported? Not at all. So we really need some expert to tell us that! It really irks me that quoted experts and news stories always include several quotes like this in their stories. They fail to put it in perspective. I see this as a western media bias. There are many ways to estimate the realistic death rate using statistics.

The key point is despite all the odds and if you attribute all the excess deaths in Africa to Covid this year, their death rate is still far lower than the western countries. The article above itself acknowledges in a paragraph lower down near the end:

Still, experts generally believe that fatalities on the continent are far lower than in the West, potentially for reasons beyond demographics.

This is despite insurmountable odds faced by Africa when compared to the West. The most medical research and pharma investments go to solving first world health problems. Not Africa’s health problem. That inequity is built into the way economics and investment decisions are made.

I live in California. Which on its own is a fifth or seventh largest economy in the world. It’s GDP as a state is more than India’s as a country and probably far more than Africa’s as a continent. Yet you should see type of sheer incompetence in managing the pandemic and inability for it to provide care for the poorer sections of the society! It is astonishingly bad management in general (not just Covid related) from a state that is one of the richest places in the world. Not can it be attributed to lower taxes. Californians pay high enough taxes amd tax collection is not an issue. It is third rate mismanagement by politicians. Rarely do the brightest and the best go into politics.

I don't trust any US-based media when it comes to international reporting that doesn't include Europe (and even that is questionable, especially on non-anglophone countries). The best I can find on reporting in Africa that doesn't treat it as one monolithic area is on the BBC:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-53181555

Key quote:

The reported death rate per capita on the continent has been low compared with other parts of the world, despite the weak health infrastructure in many African countries.
There could be a number of reasons for this:

  • The relatively young population - more than 60% are under the age of 25
  • Experience in epidemic control from tackling other diseases
  • Cross-immunity from other coronaviruses
  • Low rates of travel and more outdoor living might also help
The article goes into specific detail on certain countries, and also notes three separate trends that are currently in play. Worth a read.

My mother was in a full ICU about 10 days ago. I had to fly on a plane to go help my stepfather. It has been rough. Here in California I saw a story about Pasadena. They are starting to deprioritize treatment for patients with a lower percentage chance of surviving because they simply are maxed out. I consider it my duty to stay home, and wear a mask if I need to go out, such as to the grocery or a walk. But we are getting closer to a time where two people can dance together, and they have both received the vaccine. I look forward to that time.

I hope things are better with your family now. Yes it is a rough time. I know several cases including personal experience of how challenging covid has made getting medical attention for non-covid medical conditions in both emergency and non emergency situations.

@SoFloW Here's a case of a healthy 41-year-old man with no pre-existing conditions who died of covid.

Read it yesterday in the newsfeed. A couple of articles didn’t mention how careful or carefree he was in prior months. Since they decided to make it a news that would have been a good data point in the prevailing political environment of the country.

The probability of someone of his age and his health condition dying is very low. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Low probability implies someone will become a part of that statistics and given all things being equal (age range, prior health condition, etc) it is likely random. To lower the probability of becoming an unwilling statistic of that low probability fatality club, is to take steps to minimize the chances is to avoid in being position of having to face those odds in the first place, by eliminating undue risks. Or in other words why tempt the fate when prevention can be better than the cure. Or in straight forward words - risk management. Which brings us to the full circle where a study after study shows how bad we are at risk management. There are some risks we overestimate and some we underestimate.

Hello from sunny Florida where as we speak our real estate prices have gone way up because of people running away from liberal run state and other states. Happy to report we've been fully open for months. Our great governor Desantis through executive orders took away all power from local authorities to enforce covid restrictions on individuals and businesses. Have fun breathing through your petri dish/.

If anyone's interested in knowing more about what democrat run Californis has become watch this series. It's not an opinion piece but rather factual. Just ask @Offbeat

You are assuming Fl is better or doing better. It is not :) Your governor and his ilk need to be prosecuted for criminal negligence!

Life and death has nothing to do with left and right. That is the ENTIRE problem with the top 2/3 of North America (just in case anyone doesnt think Mexico is Noth america).

FL has more cases and deaths per 1M pop than CA.

Their government is also silencing a whistle blower who didn't agree with their numbers.
