World's Best Leads E-mail From Edie

Did anyone else get this recently? She has the following Bachata DVD now for sale

This is the description that goes with this DVD. Tell me if this makes sense?

Jazzy and Edie are considered to be two of the top social dancers in the world. This professional couple brings to you their tips, tricks, and techniques they use to dazzle audiences with their high energy, unique style, and flair. In this unique DVD, Jazzy and Edie demonstrate in explicit detail each turn pattern in literally two different directions and two different camera angles, both from the front and from above! The user has the option of choosing whether they want to see the combination on the One or the Two beat of the music, satisfying both On-2 Dancers, and On-1 Dancers. Every combination is proven 100% lead able to virtually anyone you dance with.

Jazzy and Edie explain and demonstrate the close contact necessary in classic Bachata, and the basic body movement (Cuban Motion) woven throughout the dance. The patterns range from Intermediate through highly Advanced. Dips, Turns, and Tango Flairs are just a part of this extraordinary DVD. The PERFECT gift for that someone special in your life.

All I got to say is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Seems to make sense to me - what bits don't you get ?

The part about it being danced On2, which someone else noticed as well. Everyone that I know that dances Mambo (On2), dances la bachata On1. I've never seen it in NYC, Puerto Rico or in La Republica Dominicana danced On2? I'd like to see a clip of this as well so I can see how this would work structually with the music?

The place where I go to dance on Saturday nights... most of the street dancers dance bachata on2.. I was beginning to wonder if I was doing it wrong. I learned from a Dominican and he taught me on 1. It does have a different feel to it.

I think the On1/On2 stuff is an error on her part for the Bachata DVD. It applies to the other DVDs in the e-mail, but not this one.

I've seen the DVD and don't remember it on any count other than the traditional Bachata feel. That said, I didn't look for any alternate timing for this DVD, so it may be there. On the DVDs you choose the count you want in the setup, and then it plays those versions of the patterns.

I'll check it out again later today and report back.

Thanks for the clarrification. That is what I pretty much suspected.

I just put in the Bachata DVD and I can't find a config option that allows any other timing.

I also put in the Advanced Salsa Fusion DVD and I found both timings in the config section.

My gut says since she had that option on the other 3 DVDs, she accidentally included that text with the Bachata DVD.

I write quite a bit and I've made similar mistakes many times. I'm doing a batch of similar items, and accidentally get one crossed up. I never see it while proofing it since I'm too close.

If I had been her proof-reader, I'm not sure I would have caught it either, since it requires actually loading the DVDs and verifying each one. I've seen them and I wasn't 100% sure on that issue without checking.

Don, I figured if anyone would catch it, it would be you. Moving foward is now the issue of people saying they do dance bachata On2. I'm hoping someone posts some clips of this

Yea, me too... While I've seen a few people dance it On-2, 3 or 4.6, it never looked right to me. Especially because most of the people I've seen On-2 at one point were On-3 or another count later in the tune. And they didn't make a change at some logical point in the music, it's like they ended a pattern late and restarted the one from that point for a while.

When on alternate timings, the little hip hitch (technical dance term), is in a place that doesn't look or feel right to me in the melody/rhythm phrase.

Hopefully some bachata experts will tell us if alternate timings are normal or simply ignorance by some dancers. Alternately, it's just as likely that I'm ignorant in this case. I'm sure I'll learn something either way.

BTW - The worst, out of time, messed up bachata dancer is better than me in that dance. So while I notice the timing, I respect their being on the floor dancing while I'm watching. At some point I'll join them so the critics have some more material.

I've done some alternate timings. IT gives a different feel and is better for some songs than others. BUT, I don't do it too often as most followers hate it.

It would be great to move away from the hypothetical and see some video clips, or if you can provide the name of some songs and associated timings ... thanks. :D

 Is bachata now being danced On1 and On2?

What the.....????
I know, right? I mean, really. If the hip hitch happens (organically) on each four, where does it happen if someone dances bachata On2? I'm confused.

I am in Florida. Im not saying these ppl are intentionally dancing on 2. Maybe they just start dancing when ever they feel like and it happens to be on 2.

OK, I was just wondering if this was something they learned in the DR and, if so, what part ... this would be something worth researching.

That was my response when I saw Edie's e-mail. However, there are 1 or 2 people that didn't notice anything strange cause they said they've danced bachata On2. I agree with you that it doesn't seem to make sense structurally with the music. Like I said, I'd like to see some video clips and also the rationale from a music standpoint, if one exist.

Customarily Bachata was danced starting with the left foot (leader), side or forward, on the 1, when it migrated out of the Dominican Republic it began to be dance with the left foot stepping on the 4, making the 1 and 4 the two most prominent beats on which folks who had some sort of training danced Bachata.

We are becoming too technical with this dancing thing. No wonder it’s common to see dancers with a total disjunction between the music and the dance. I've danced with trained dancers who refuse to dance bachata to any beat other than the 1, refuse to make a turn at any beat but the one... so much so that I end up dancing with an ice cube.

I've danced Bachata to all beats, if the person with whom I'm dancing feels that she should dance where-ever, why in the world would I wonder why she isn’t dancing as per my rules of engagement? She’s there to shake it all about, have fun and go home. I do wonder why in the world we’ve become so rigid.

Here in NY City in any latin (salsa/merenge/bachata/regeton/hip-hop) venue, couples will dance bachata, merengue, or any type of music to any beat. It is a very common sight. We should not really abide by so many rules to have fun. Let Pablo form Honduras Bachata the 2, I bet you he is going to squeeze his lady and feel every once of love inside her whether on the 2 or 4?
