I tried changing the list weekly vs adding a one or two new songs every week and keeping songs that people really like for a little longer. The second option seems to work better for my students. Have your students expressed any particular preferences Terence?
Not really, altho they do say some songs are more difficult to find the starting point. And, if I find a song is a little too fast for them, I will cut it short . I may repeat some songs after a 2 month period . And, I make a point of occasionally playing for e.g. a Pachanga.. not for dancing, but to illustrate the wide range of musical compositions that co exist .
I have 3 in my beginners class that have taken elsewhere ( one for 4yrs ! ) and its pitiful the amount of foundation work, and the musical concepts, that they do not know. One said, all they had taken was Cuban style ( the 4yr one ).. it was as Cuban as Quickstep .
Terence, don't some of these people express their disappointment at being taken for a ride by these "salsa teachers", when they realize the amount of stuff that they have NOT been taught ?
By the way, I am listening to some Charlie Palmieri tracks.
Dangerous territory, but necessary I suppose, or how else are they going to "wake up" to the fact that they have been taken for a ride. Its not the first time I have come across this ( unfortunately ).. Ive even had those that never came back after the 1st class ( shaking someones foundational beliefs is dangerous territory ! )..
It must be a good feeling for a teacher such as yourself to put some of these dancers on the right path.but mostly, they begin to adapt to the changes with positive feedback .
