What I'm listening to right now...

I tried changing the list weekly vs adding a one or two new songs every week and keeping songs that people really like for a little longer. The second option seems to work better for my students. Have your students expressed any particular preferences Terence?

Not really, altho they do say some songs are more difficult to find the starting point. And, if I find a song is a little too fast for them, I will cut it short . I may repeat some songs after a 2 month period . And, I make a point of occasionally playing for e.g. a Pachanga.. not for dancing, but to illustrate the wide range of musical compositions that co exist .

I have 3 in my beginners class that have taken elsewhere ( one for 4yrs ! ) and its pitiful the amount of foundation work, and the musical concepts, that they do not know. One said, all they had taken was Cuban style ( the 4yr one ).. it was as Cuban as Quickstep .

And the tragic comedy that afflicts most of the International Salsa Scene continues....LOL!

Terence, don't some of these people express their disappointment at being taken for a ride by these "salsa teachers", when they realize the amount of stuff that they have NOT been taught ?

By the way, I am listening to some Charlie Palmieri tracks.

Its not the first time I have come across this ( unfortunately ).. Ive even had those that never came back after the 1st class ( shaking someones foundational beliefs is dangerous territory ! ).. but mostly, they begin to adapt to the changes with positive feedback .

Im also sure they feel somewhat of a disappointment, but I always reassure them that, not everything they have been taught is incorrect, sometimes, just a different style .

Dangerous territory, but necessary I suppose, or how else are they going to "wake up" to the fact that they have been taken for a ride.

It must be a good feeling for a teacher such as yourself to put some of these dancers on the right path.:)

I am listening to some old Fruko tracks, as I write this.

La maquinaría CD by Van van, trying to form an opinion. In general I agree that it's more along the lines of Arrasando. Taken 1 by 1 the songs are all OK (except for the hideous vocal mangling efectos) but nothing that jumps out and makes you scream. I want CDs to make me scream :)

Tracks I would like to play (IF I had the right salseros or a good gig.. my group are all beginners )

Usted Abuso.. W. Colon

Soy Campesino... Guarachando

El Tumbao y Celia... C. Cruz

Swing la Moderna... R .Barretto

Guajira y Ven... W. Colon

El Huerfanito... Trio la Rosa

Una descarga... Cachao

Cada ve que te veo.. F. Baloy

Vacio .... Santiago Ceron
