Pot calling the kettle black anyone?
Philosophically speaking I don't agree that only a teacher can bless someone to be called a student or let them be called his/her teacher. Less so the students themselves. The essence of teaching (which is a very noble thing to do) is to inspire, both from close and from far. A teacher can't decide who or who may not follow his teaching. That is out of teacher's hands, otherwise we are entering realm of a religion.
Usually the students are more zealous than the teacher himself/herself and claim in the teacher's name something the teacher themselves may not approve off.
Students can feel upset, doesn't mean they have right to be upset. That is an important distinction. When you are upset with someone or something, it is better to take it up directly with the concern person than berate publicly.
Imitation they say is sincerest form of flattery. In my books it is wrong to imitate something (I am talking about things like choreo) without proper attribution. More so when done publicly. Art is often imitated and improved. Many cover singers copy the original singer. So many movies are remade. The list goes on. Sometimes the imitaters market things better than the original person and become famous. That is life! There is difference between inspiration, imitation/copying and outright forgery. There are gray lines but inspiration and imitation attempts should not be confused with forgery.
If a teacher is upset with someone doing something they can take it up with that person directly. I do not think students have to take up the cudgels on teacher's behalf unless something is insulting. That probably happens when what is not insulting is perceived as insulting.
Going only by what @Hervin had posted on the forums, I wouldn't fault him with a lot of what has been said. We are free to differ on our opinions about styles, preferences, etc. But attacking someone personally for something that is not racist, bigoted, chuvanistic, bullying, etc is not cool. Especially attacking incognito. If you feel that strongly why not do it openly
I personally didn't interpret @Hervin as saying he trained at the FM's studio regularly or with FM. I remember him specifically saying he has taken only one private with FM.
This post has already become longer than I wanted it to be.
Hervin is hardly claiming he has a degree he doesn’t (like several Spanish and Italian politicians have)
Let’s just celebrate his great effort, the courage it took to enter the contest, and most of all the great earning experience it must have been.
I don't know, the forum has been a little slow. I might compete in the WSS next year just for another thread like this, even just to bring in new peopleOkay, settle down people. We can keep up the valuable and positive discussion or we can be forced to lock the thread. I know what we’d prefer!
You must have missed it when I said this.![]()
We want to know what are your costume ideas!? I bet that's the thing that can distinguish you from the clone army.I don't know, the forum has been a little slow. I might compete in the WSS next year just for another thread like this, even just to bring in new people
The only way is the Maykel Fonts way. Shirtless. We want to know what are your costume ideas!? I bet that's the thing that can distinguish you from the clone army.
pretending that it's ok for him to say he's trained with someone he hasn't, is not doing him any favours.
Funny. So do you get more out of the following classes? The defining criteria is X# of $ you've given them![]()
I think the question is - does FM himself mind the claim? If he did, then yes, it’s an issue. If not, not so much. In the absence of FM himself weighing in, we would prefer we just moved on, and kept the idiscussion to enriching topics. Thanks.
I started a thread on the topic here When to say someone is your teacher? so as not to bury it in this thread.it is an interesting question on what a 'student' means!
Been dancing salsa 17 years.I have competed though with a partner and not solo. Have also performed night shows at major congresses.... I really liked your choreography. Very good musicality and relaxation, good body control. I am very impressed. Great job Hervin! You guys are awesome, thank you so much for the support. I really appreciate it.
Sadly I didn't even make it through the first round...
I honestly didn't do my best, as I felt really intimidated and alienated by the "crowd". It wasn't a neutral crowd of spectators. It was a crowd made up of solely other teams and competitors. So, when someone with a big team came up they had a group of 20 people (their teammates) cheering for them....
When I came out and as I performed it was DEAD SILENT, with a lot of people looking away... I wasn't prepared for that, so I felt awkward, and it threw me off my game (You can see in my choreography that I tumbled and lost balance like 2 or 3 times).
I didn't go there expecting to win, but I didn't think I would be flat out rejected.
I wanted to try out something new and see what would happen.
In my opinion, there were other people who did really good, but watching the replay and seeing the people who made it... I think I should have at least advanced to the next round.
I felt like if I didn't wear the glitter and had a choreography with flips, and moving around the stage (just for the sake of occupying space, as I don't think it added to the choreography) I wasn't going to be accepted.
My style is not for everyone and I understand that. I'm not going to change it just because I wasn't accepted in that competition.
Here is a short video I made yesterday... Enjoy!
And for anyone who wants to see the replay of my choreography, here it is...
I just put the video above to make a point... It was some random freestyle, and I didn't like how it looked.
In terms of the dance looking a particular way...
Wether that would be "powerful displacement", or "masculine", or "feminine"
We all have our tastes and preferences...
I don't think the dance "has to look a certain way"
I believe it all depends on how your feeling and what you want to communicate. That's just my opinion.
I believe dance is a tool for expression like any other. And the body mechanics are just like a instrument player practicing scales...
The point of the music is not scales, it's to communicate, to express...
Music don't have to sound "powerful" all the time... Or any particular way for that matter.
Same with dance.
I believe for a dancer to be great he/she is able to use the skills and tools of a dancer to be able to express him/herself honestly.
It's a big journey and it takes a lot of skills to do that.
It's easier just to learn how to look powerful and learn some explosive/flashy moves and tricks... than achieving what I'm talking about here...
In any case...
Here is a clip of me doing something faster and more powerful...
