The Polls

So stupid.
I honestly think it's because they drznk the conservative Indian narrative that because Jagmeet is Sikh, he is a terrorist.

You got it all wrong. Only a small single digit percentage of Sikhs in Canada support the terrorists or their misguided cause. Most Canadians do not understand nor care about the dynamics because it isn’t about Canada. Unlikely that particular issue impacted the NDP chances. It was all domestic politics.

As far as Jagmeet Singh, he clearly sympathized and hood and winked about terrorist crime and those behind it. Until the public pressure forced him to back track somewhat. It is on the record in an interview with press where he repeatedly refused to accept the perpetrator of biggest terrorist act from Canada. The perpetrator who was identified by Canadian govt’s own inquiry and none of the identified Canadians were ever bought to justic. This is the March 2018 account of that interview from previous year I think. This is from Canadian press that is not interested, doesn’t understand and downplays terrorist acts emanating from Canada. Same with most Canadian govts in the last three decades. Therefore most Canadians do not know the dynamics.

It was bombing of plane which killed 329 people of which 269 were Canadians. Counted as worst aviation tragedy in air:

There is no “conservative” Indian narrative. You can’t view this from conservative-liberal lens.

Ofcourse there are other issues related to Canadian domestic politics which made him unpopular and lose support. I read that he resigned. His terrorist sympathizing isn’t in consciousness of Canadian voters. He backed Trudeau though his popularity was crashing. Was too late to pull the support after people had been angry enough on Trudeau to give conservatives 27% advantage as late as Dec. I think supporting Trudeau for too long must have caused NDP a lot of damage.

Went down to vote this morning, and ... there were no democracy sausages at the local polling booth! Very, very not happy. We have compulsory voting (no argument there) but it comes with your complimentary democracy sausage. :(

At least the election is almost over and done with. It seemed to be a particularly unpleasant campaign, with stories of aggressive campaign volunteers, people ripping down others' corflutes, threats of violence and so forth. It appears Trump's influence has emboldened such behavior.

Democracy sausage. Australian election tradition. A sausage in bread with onions and sauce (“ketchup” in American English). Sometimes mustard too. Straight off the barbie. The smell wafts off the barbie as you’re queuing to vote, then you get yours afterwards, and can make a donation to the school that’s hosting the polling booth.

I feel robbed. No democracy sausages on offer is totally unAustralian.

While I don’t watch those commercial channels like 9, had to laugh at Albo crossing live from the G, and all the AFL (Australian Rules Football) metaphors. The man knows how sports mad Melbournians are! The G is more or less the most sacred place in the state.

In the UK local elections yesterday the Reform party (far right) did astonishingly well. They have a real chance of gaining more seats in the next general election and becoming the main opposition party. The Conservative party was almost wiped out… The analysis has the Conservatives on just 15% of the vote share.

good to see that the candidates campaigned on election day, and interesting that both were in Melbourne, Victoria....i agree, Anthony Albanese really knows the importance of appealing to sports fans :)

i have a question...have always wondered how Australians see the country, as an island or a continent?

In the polls in Australia a similar thing has happened as in the US. Labour suddenly went ahead in the last six weeks.

All of the above :). Yes, Australians are nuts about sport (cricket, AFL, netball, swimming, etc. - and also rugby in Sydney), but Melbourne likes to call itself the 'world's sporting capital' :).

Melbourne is an electoral battleground this time around, particularly the exponentially growing outer suburbs. Traditionally Victoria is Australia's most progressive state, and favors Labor and left-leaning parties. Many Liberal seats fell to the teals last election (climate change focused independents to put it very simply). However, the state Labor government has been performing disastrously so the Liberals felt they could turn some seats in Melbourne and Labor feels threatened in Victoria - hence the focus on Melbourne.

Polls just closed in Western Australia so voting has been completed. So far looks very similar to the result in Canada. Labor ahead and Liberal (conservative) leader's seat in doubt. I'll be interested to see what happens in the Senate. One of the TV commentators actually just said "This makes us Canada" :).

No - I wrote her exact words as she said them. In the context in which it was spoken it made grammatical sense :)

Wow - the election's already been called (for Labor). Now to see whether Dutton definitely loses his seat.

I was talking about my post as I wrote US and can’t edit it now..

Yep, Dutton gone. Looking at the reaction to the victory speeches, Penny Wong is more popular than Albo :). It was unusual seeing the usually extremely measured and diplomatically spoken Wong let loose somewhat and show emotion.

Nice to see leaders being gracious in defeat and respectful of each other, which isn't always the case these days ...

Trump is good for liberal democracy :D except in the USA which is not like a semi-authoritarian state where the institutional checks and balances lack spine to control him and are being defanged. I hope republicans will pay for this dearly in next two election cycle. But the hatred of Democrats in Republican voters is far more than the pain created by Trump on his own base and voters.

From the article:

Overall, what can be learned from these elections and those in Canada and Greenland? For one, Trump’s international toxicity is creating serious election challenges for conservative parties around the world. It also appears to have created a trend in which voters are now favoring incumbents after years of tossing them out in Europe and other countries. This is perhaps because the incumbent is seen as more experienced in dealing with the United States and with global economic volatility.

Cost of living crisis (which caused Brexit) is afflicting all of the developed world giving rise to right wing populism. From Canada, USA, UK to Singapore and Australia there is affordable housing crisis and cost of living is making people elect right wing crazies. Immigration issue only makes it more toxic.

Seems true for the english speaking commonwealth nations, but not for others. In Romania yesterday a declared Trump lover got the most votes. In Germany the chancellor lost and right-wing raised a lot. So you may alter this theory to: those who understand Trump in original language fear him more.

Victory Day 2025: Reports are swirling that Secretary of State Marco Rubio could attend Russia’s May 9 Victory Day Parade in Moscow, a historic first amid rising global tensions, What does Rubio’s rumored visit mean for U.S.-Russia relations, and why now?

Trump likes military parades and is planning one for his birthday which coincides with US army’s 250th anniversary. June 14th.

May be they want to learn how to have one from the more experienced ?

p.s. any country in the west has a military parade annually? France on Bastille day?
