Not to be nitpicky!!! Do Fania days Count?
(Most of) The band and particularly the lead singer has to be of Puerto Rican descent, where they record is not so important. Most of the big names recorded with Fania.

For clarification, are you distinguishing from music made in Puerto Rico vs. NYC?Absolutely love the Salsa music of Puerto Rico!
Looking for more recommendations of bands and tracks to listen to.
I feel I've been in the Timba wasteland too long. LOL.

Post your favourite tracks.
If there's a thread already existing, post links to that.
I think an argument can be made for a difference in sound and feel between the bands from New York and the bands from Puerto Rico in the 70's and 80's. I'm generalizing, but NYC bands had a harder aggressive sound and the PR bands were a bit more smooth and refined -- the really good bands all swung like crazy. There were more non-Puerto Rican ( and non-Latino ) musicians on the scene in New York which also had an effect ( eg, Barry Rogers, Larry Harlow, Lewis Kahn among countless others ).
