Songs dictating the beat to dance on?

Forced by the lady; to me La Llave is most definitely an on2 tune, but on2 has not taken off here in the E Mids, although numbers are growing (fortunately).

Re. learning casino, far be it from me to tell someone what to do, but personally I find some women just cannot dance slot style, on1 or on2, but can manage some casino. Plus I think slot style and timba is an inappropriate combination, so a couple of years ago I learnt some very basic casino, just for those occasions. And I enjoy a good rueda.

(Incidentally, is Abre Que Voy a timba?)

a couple more examples of those on2 feeling songs:
  1. Indestructible
  2. Manos Duras
  3. Charlie Palmieri - Muñeca
  4. Eddie Palmieri - Busca Lo Tuyo
  5. La-33- My Favorite Things

Thank you for the song list with links to them.

1- Agreed
2- I would find it difficult to dance on2 because of strong piano accompanied by horns and cow bell.
3- This is more of a shine song rather than partner work I guess :) on1-on2? I don't know. I would try to follow piano and step accordingly.
4- This song didn't force me to dance on any beat. I would leave decision to my partner I guess :)
5- Agreed for the same reason with you. Nice song btw.

Now and then I will dance on clave. Don't ask me why, but I've done it twice this past month and each time it happened with a lady who likes dancing clave so she gets excited and tells me what I'm doing. I might have done it at other times, but didn't know so. :-( I've danced other times with her and not done on clave, so must be the song. Next time it happens I'll make sure to get the song.

What do you mean by that? Dancing 3 steps and 2?

Would you be referring to the section which starts around 1:20 into a song which is pretty much 3 minutes long? :P

I'm referring to the whole song, except the end (3 mins ->). Maybe you have a salsa version of it then, mine is from the album Mi vida es cantar, and I only state my opinion here, but I can in no way fit in a clave in the first part of the song, neither explicit nor implied, therefore I don't consider it a salsa.

There are many types of cumbias, I'm not a spe******t on them, since they all sound a bit the same to me (they sound like you are riding on a horse), but I know that argentinian cumbia is different from colombian one.

Edit: why did it censor spe******t?

some songs are so fast i wouldn't dance it in any timing, though i would listen to the band. I have these kinds of biases :D hong kong mambo is on2 by the way.

I do not think that way. But often Timba dancing really calls for reggeaton/despelote and rumba parts which are danced separate from the partner. Pretty strongly cuban flavored slot style where timing is maybe closer to power2 bit reminds me bit of Puerto Rican On2.

Incidentally, is Abre Que Voy a timba?

Definitely and really good one.:)

As I said La Vida es un Carnaval is extremely Cumbia-esque for it's first half (calling it the end really is a bit extreme given that in any recording it makes for about half the song.)

However in terms of Colombian Salsa (the original which I know most about) it lacks the plodding downbeats which usually comes with Cumbia. Further the horns are not playing phrases or in a tone at all reminiscent of the traditional Cumbia wind instruments. The backing singers aren't in a call and response with the lead singer as one would expect. I think it's relatively easy to clap a clave through, especially with the phrasing of the singing which isn't doing much to emphasise the 1,3,5,7 big hits. It's very rare to have such extensive lyric phrasing across counts of 8, it makes the whole thing just a leeeeetle too smooth for proper Cumbia.

So you could either call it Cumbia-influenced Salsa or Salsa-influence Cumbia, however it definitely isn't straight Cumbia. Dancing Salsa to it is perfectly acceptable, and wouldn't feel nearly as odd as trying to Salsa to something really plodding with everything telling you to to hit those downbeats for all you're worth.

My opinion of course.

This song is cumbia, only the ending would be salsa.

This is a dominantly Salsa song with Cumbia influences no doubt. It is however definitely not a Cumbia.

I'd say it's
0:00-2:43 Cumbia
2:43-2:47 Break
2:47-4:10 Salsa
4:10-4:15 Break
4:15-4:34 Cumbia (outtro)

i.e., 1 1/2 minutes of salsa in a 4 1/2 minute song, so I see it as a cumbia song with salsa in the middle.

hmm let me over simplify this sub-discussion. that song in not dictating neither salsa on1 nor on2. i got my answer, thanks :)

For me this dance ilustrates the conflict :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3GwkgNS7ew
Check where they break on1 and where on2 :)

For me to dance ET2 timing means I have to give up power in open breaks and CBLs. Not always, I've seen bolivicano to do it and when I find these video's I'll figure out how he does it. Maybe it's different music. Note that I don't mind dancing against music, to bounce against the beat, but it's different feel, than when you go with it. Also when LA timing is used it's possible to emphasize 2nd beat if music asks for it. So my endgoal is not to worry about it, but use my ears and listen to the music.

When someone want to dance salsa with me to a cumbia song, I choose on1. The salsa part of the song I'd happily dance on2 or on1, but not the cumbia part...
