NYC trip journal
Today was day 5 of my New York trip -- I had abandoned all expectations for this trip given the current situation, and it also started off with random strange stuff happening: a big scare that my pre-trip covid test was positive (they thought I was someone else), and then when I got to JFK airport in NYC, the customs officer decided I was suspicious and sent me for additional customs check with the other suspected terrorists -- I think it was due to all my Cuba stamps in my passport

This had never happened to me before in all my years of US travel, so, thanks, Trump...
But once that was out of the way, NYC welcomed me with open arms as usual

In my first 4 days I went to 3 amazing salsa parties

(would have been 4 if LVG had not been cancelled)
The first two I didn't even know about because they were not on the dance events calendar, a friend told me about them: turns out Adolfo's NY studio, Empire Mambo (I didn't even know Adolfo had a studio in NY lol) was having their 1-year anniversary, so they did anniversary parties on Friday and Saturday, with a live band on Friday. The music and dancing was top-notch. And to top it all off, I nabbed a cha cha with Adolfo

-- the only live cha cha the band played

(I had never danced with him before) They had videographers filming the whole thing (no pressure! lol) so I will hopefully get the video.
The event was also great because it felt very intimate, got to see the same people Friday and Saturday and dance a lot with the ones I connected with the best. And the music...amazing! They had really good DJs, especially DJ Charon who had come from Florida.
Then last night I went to Taj, which had their usual live band Monday night party. This is one of the very few salsa venues in NYC that have remained unchanged, and I have always loved their parties (and their floor -- it's one of the best dance floors in NYC!), so it was great to be there again
Here is a video from last night

-- I am in the video from minute 3:03 dancing with one of my oldest salsa friends, who is a lovely dancer, it was great to see him again
Then, another surprise is that the new studio where Frankie is relocating his classes will reopen tomorrow, so I will go to his open work and partnerwork classes.
Feels so great to be back and dance in NYC again
PS I danced with mask at all the parties, it got pretty uncomfortable especially during fast songs, but doable. All the parties checked my vaccination proof.
