Salsa open diary

Taking a break from socials until the Covid-19 cases go down again. I am vaccinated but can not afford to get ill even a couple days the next few months.

try adding electrolytes to your water or chugging gatorade.

Gatorade with its high sugar content is probably the worst idea. It is marketing of electrolyte mixed with a lot of sugar.

Electrolytes with water or coconut water is the best way to go imo. I prefer coconut water and take it with me often when dancing or playing sports.

Not confident about my endurance this weekend. Will need to do a lot of lazy dancing and sitting on the stage.

I don't know about my endurance level. I think it should hold up. All I usually need is a break of one song if the feet feel tired. Don't want any niggling injuries. I think for three years before the shutdown, had a series of different niggling injuries affecting dancing. Last year's shutdown was good to completely recover. Dancing a lot does take wear and tear on the body. No wonder the performers with their rigorous practice schedule have a short shelf life.

Tonight was the first pre-party. Three more pre-parties on tue, wed and thur, before the upto 7am in the morning dancing kicks off next Friday.

For me it was the opposite. Didn't have any niggling injuries until after the shutdown. Went 3-5 months without dancing, then during a restart something bad always happened, usually in my ankle/foot area.

Regular training helped improve motor coordination, but did nothing for my endurance nor did it stop me from incurring tendon/joint stress injuries, which I have been dealing with a lot lately. It's incredibly annoying especially since they're not muscle injuries which require mostly just rest. Joint pain is much more complicated. I blame aging.

Regular dancing was good for me. In this period of my life, it isn't a good idea going out 5 times a week, but neither is going dancing once every 3-5 months.

Once a week would be ideal. I can keep my endurance levels up and most likely stave off those niggling injuries. When I'm not dancing a lot, I go out on walks and work on my mobility as much as I can.

My salsa dancing has been max twice a week. More once a week. Only run up to the Congress is presenting more opportunity to go out dancing over the next few days.

I am realizing that the combination of niggling injuries and dancing in EU, made some bad habits creep into my dancing. The forced break and the restart was good in wiping them away.

The SF Congress pre-parties kicked into gear from last Saturday. Last night was 3rd pre-party. Succeeded in evading Starmambo (the video guy), because the place was small :) When started a dance, I would move to the other end of the dance floor from where he was hovering. Especially if I was dancing with one of the better followers. Not much of a space because the floor was small, about 3 to 4 dancing couple length wise and 15ish feet wide. I think he has a sense I prefer not to be taped or may it's not worth it :D

There are a couple of girls visiting from Chile. They are also performing but very good social dancers. Couldn't get to dance with one of my fav followers who is visiting. Since she is popular, guys were pouncing on her left and right as soon as the songended. By time our paths crossed on the floor, she needed a break and I had to leave soon after. Some visiting leaders were putting her through a wringer of rough/hectic partnerwork and one of them was later gushing to me how well she stays connected and is and to follow everything! I wanted to roll my eyes.

The pre-partied have been leader heavy. If you are not aggressive, there won't be anyone desirable (dancing wise) left to ask. Most time no one who wants to dance is available if you are late or someone you asked said no.

Luckily last night wasn't over-crowded - about 70-80 people. Tonight is official pre-party and a bigger venue.

Just curious. Is it just as leader heavy in your other non Salsa scenes? What about Bachata/Kizomba/Zouk, WCS and Tango?

Sounds apocalyptic to me. Darwin would have made some notes in his diary about that.
I think I am a lucky guy to live here around.

Yes they are all leader heavy. Tango is as well though followers keep complaining that it is follower heavy and I keep sending pics from milonga showing line of leaders not dancing. Then they say it is exception for that day :) And I take new pics and keep sending them :D On some days Tango can be balanced. I haven't encountered follower heavy Tango here.

Bachata is definitely leader heavy too. Don't know about Kizomba and Zouk. Zouk followers have complained about lack of leaders to dance with.

Last night was official pre-party. It was very crowded and got to dance with almost everyone I wanted to. Only danced with out of towners and then were all good. Except one who turned out to be not exactly a beginner but would follow the lead very late or incorrectly. The video guy got me on that one but I think he is probably not going to waste time posting it :)

You neglected to take into account the periphery. That place is pretty small. You're in practically every video :D That's actually quite impressive.

Btw, the leader-to-follower ratio is just like the ratio found in Eastern Europe, if you replaced all the dudes standing by the bar with females. :troll:

I thought he posts it after a few weeks or months. Sounds like he is becoming very efficient. Doesn't he use that lens which cuts out the periphery. But what are you doing stalking the videos from SF :D

Since yesterday Steve has been taping multiple dances of a friend. He is a really good dancer. I would say probably one of the very best leads anywhere.

Now you know we don't bluff on how leader heavy it gets :wacky:

The wed place is pretty small and is a bar. The official pre-party was on a large dance floor. It is a club house and bar is in different room.

Freshly back after the first night dancing ended at 7.30am. The music was very good and many good dances. There are a few people from Europe who are here only for the festival. No Toronto crew this year.

Bachata room was packed and it is a large room. However salsa room was packed too and the salsa floor is perhaps twice as big as the bachata. I only danced one to start the evening since it was Dominican.

Zouk and Kizomba rooms were almost dead.

But what are you doing stalking the videos from SF

I stalk every channel. As soon as you said you were actively trying to hide from the camera guy, I started looking for you...lol. The venue made it even easier to pick out individual people.

I am pretty good at this. Give me a festival name, date and your participation (provided i know what you look like), and I will scroll through video feeds like nobody's business and get IDs pretty fast.
