Salsa music you do not like! Aka true confessions

Actually I love a good mambo /moña. The more metales the merrier I say. I like trumpet/trombone/sax. Nice combo, but of course Van Van and Revé do nicely with just the trombones. Also like strings and flute. Was just watching a video from Paulo FG's 15th anniversary concert where Alexander did a little solo at the end of De La Habana...nice.
Yeah a trombone only brass section can be a very nice sound.

Who's JG?
I missed this question..."El mentiroso con cara tierno, tú lo conoces se llama Juan Guillermo!"

estrella posted a link to Bill's review of his first CD, which was produced by great timbero Juan Manuel Ceruto. JG has an interesting story. His father, Juan Almeida Bosque, was one of the main leaders of the revolution and also a composer :)

JG studied law and got his degree in 2009 I believe but also was part of Gente D'Zona in the early days and the started his own group which tends more towards modern latin/salsa/timba/timbaton. I actually quite like his music even if it's not my usual cup pf tea. It's fun and happy and great party music.

Here is a song from his latest album with the lyrics written by his father. Starts out romantica but switches to timba.

Here's another one I like - yes sappy but I like it and the guitar works for me "Hota Hey" ;)

Chris. Piano solos!
About once a month I attend a duelling pianos Meet Up event. The songs are by request but after a while they all sound the same. We all get a free drink and everyone gets up and dances. I last about an hour and a half, the time it takes to drink my wine. Then a couple of us leave, go down the block to a blues bar. Piano just doesn't have the edginess.

Brass, strings, drums get me to the next level. Piano is like interlude to something more dramatic.

Screaming guitars in salsa? Not so much. I think JG has actually succeeded in making electric guitar work well with salsa. Other than that I usually find it at best neutral but most often irritating. Anyway always interesting to see how differently we view the music and yet all have the same passion. Personally I don't like the vibraphone in salsa. Bugs me. Sounds goofy. Other than that I have no problem with any particular instrumentation. I like everything from a septeto to a charanga to a charangón LOL
How do you feel about this song with vibraphone AND electric guitar (2:58 mark)? :troll:

LOL I hope I never hear anyone play this song at a club. The first part sounds like salsa elevator music and the electric guitar actually sounds better to me than the vibes but still - no.

LOL well the elevator is a good place to practice spins I've heard. And yes as I've said many times, it's really interesting how we all share a very similar obsession and yet have such diverse musical tastes. I suppose for someone who isn't familiar with salsa it all would sound pretty much the same and they'd want to dance to Ricky Martin anyway ;)
