Salsa music you do not like! Aka true confessions

The new Charanga Habanera just doesn't fit with me for some reason.. I love the older stuff and the stuff they did a couple of albums back but the newest album just isn't working for me that much. They have some good stuff there, too, but on a general level I don't really use their music anymore when teaching as I don't get "the vibes" from it.

I could not agree more. The earlier stuff is so much better. To me, El Charanguero Mayor CD was the band's peak. A blend of their old swing with the more modern timba sound.

I'm a new member and I have a collection of Latin music in my computer, salsa, merengue, bachata, vallenato, duranguense, cumbia, punta, grupero, and of course, my two favorite genres, bolero and balada. I also have a collection of music from other languages. The salsa music that I don't like is salsa choke. There are worse, salsaton, I hate that hybrid genre. What I dislike from salsaton is the Lloraras remix that Oscar De Leon makes a duet with Tego Calderon. Also that Salsaton song from El Rubio Loco is also pretty annoying. It's a fusion of salsa and reggaeton, since reggaeton is my least favorite genre. I can tolerate, "La negra tiene tumbao" by Celia Cruz, timba music and DLG though. I hope I'm welcome in this forum.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for introducing yourself. I think most of us here aren't overly fond of reggeaton or salsaton. Salsa-choke isn't something I've heard at the clubs here (Stockholm) yet. But I will admit that there are a few timbaton songs that have grown on me. The group Los 4 make songs that I find more palatable and even fun in small doses. I also like El dueño del party by JG and then there is the rumba with shade of reggaeton by Yoruba Andabo "La gozadera" - no not related to the song by GdZ and from a couple of years ago. It's rumba but you can sense a reggeaton influence in the coros IMO. I am very much into the Cuban side of the spectrum when it comes to Latin music although I do have some Carlos Vives, Juanes, Maná and Shakira (pre-US).

Salsa choke, the dance isn't salsa-related. It is an erotic dance that doesn't even look like salsa, it looks like you're trying to mix the perreo dance of reggaeton with salsa.

Another one that I can tolerate is F2F, their songs are R&B-flavored salsas which many of them are covers. One of their salsas are a cover of Amanda Miguel's "Amame una vez mas". I'd rather listen to them than to DLG.

I don't like some of the so called 'modern mambo' songs, they do not make me happy.
It's 2 heavy with a lot of instrumental parts and absolutely no fun, way to serious!

I really love the Cuban music and dance styles, because you can dance anything you feel like, instead of a shine , you can do a disco move or body move and it's great fun.
Note: a good Cuban style DJ will not only play Timba but all styles (Son, Salsa, Guaguanco, Rumba and so on...)

About Salsa Romantica , I can really enjoy it as wel. I can enjoy the old Mambo and Guaguanco styles ,
I love to watch a couple dancing on 2 the NY style when their timing is good AND when they are having fun.

Salsa makes me happy and I enjoy all music that makes me dance... I'm just an allround salsa freak i quess ....LOL

I like just about all music. My violin and I dislike certain instruments when they dominate. Too much piano is aggravating in anything but especially Latin. With few exceptions, the piano is often like white bread being clutter and little substance. The piano is worse when it attempts any type of percussion feel in
Latin (the exception Tango). Please leave it to percussion instruments

LOL the piano was the first thing that drew me to salsa - not the boring repetitive patterns but the exciting, wild tumbaos of timba. Nothing catches my attention like a great piano tumbao at the beginning of a song.

EDIT: OK a good rumba intro always catches my attention too

In western music the piano is generally classified as a percussion instrument. Sometimes classified as a stringed instrument as well, but it is a percussion instrument.

Ufffff, that's guaranteed to send Larrry Harlow and Eddie Palmieri to an early grave......I just love Salsa Forums.........where did my montunos go?????

Yes, it is a stringed instrument. However, give me a screaming guitar or out of control, frenzied bongos. When the piano dominates it's often like putting the music back into some 'proper' box. It's ok if off in the background.

Well, to each his/her own... for me, nothing like a greased up piano guajeo smack dab in the middle of the pocket.

How do you feel about trumpets?

Screaming guitars in salsa? Not so much. I think JG has actually succeeded in making electric guitar work well with salsa. Other than that I usually find it at best neutral but most often irritating. Anyway always interesting to see how differently we view the music and yet all have the same passion. Personally I don't like the vibraphone in salsa. Bugs me. Sounds goofy. Other than that I have no problem with any particular instrumentation. I like everything from a septeto to a charanga to a charangón LOL

Actually I love a good mambo /moña. The more metales the merrier I say. I like trumpet/trombone/sax. Nice combo, but of course Van Van and Revé do nicely with just the trombones. Also like strings and flute. Was just watching a video from Paulo FG's 15th anniversary concert where Alexander did a little solo at the end of De La Habana...nice.

I agree about screaming electric guitars in Latin music. Santana created a great latin rock sound back in the day with Black Magic Woman and all that material , but electric guitar has never really worked in Salsa or Timba, for my taste, anyway.

Actually, Luis Enrique used some sporadic electric guitar very tastefully on the Ciclos album, now that I think of it.

Who's JG?
