I've been dancing rueda for nine months now, and it has really improved my one-on-one partnered salsa. As a leader, I found that rueda has expanded my repetoire of moves that are fun, easily recalled and leadable on the dance floor.
Before rueda, I learned numerous combinations at the many classes I've taken over two years since I started salsa. But I can honestly say that I've forgotten more combinations than I remember! With rueda, it's totally different. By sheer repetition the moves are ingrained into my muscle memory. And since many moves are built on others, I understand the common threads that allow for variation and play during one-on-one dancing.
Of course, dancing as a group has such a great vibe, and I've met so many new people. In a way, rueda is a great equalizer, bringing different levels of dancers together overcoming the usual hierarchy that exists. I have almost as much fun taking it easy dancing in circles with beginners as I do facing the challenge of trying to keep up with advanced casineros.
