Mambo Experiment with a Few Live Session Musicians

BullitproofSoul

Son Montuno
here's a sort of Mambo experiment I did outsourcing a few parts to a few musicians. Mostly overseas, they're , how shall I say, towards the lower end of the payscale, but pretty good nonetheless

Giovani Goulart - Conga, maracas, Timbales

Lionel Antonio Tortolero Quintero - Cajon

Eric "BigaudioBox" - Trumpet

Stephen K. Donnelly - Upright Bass

This isn't mixed, just some mild compression on different instruments. Any feedback would be appreciated. Actually, this being Salsaforums, I'd be curious to know if its danceable at all.

Class! :D
I'd say this is very danceable. Lots of energy and tight playing.
The mixing is rough obviously, and the arrangement could be tidied up a wee bit methinks (to take the song somewhere) - but on the whole, you have the makings of a class wee track here.
:dancingbanana:

that's better feedback then I expected.

I actually don't have plans to develop this piece any further, it was more my first experiment with these guys, so i sorta just picked a cacthy "sketch" I developed a few months ago to experiment with.

If its any consolation, the track after the next after the next that I'll recording has a similar groove and tempo.

I like the trumpet work on this... he has a nice classical ( "legit" ) sound and tone, good intonation and some interesting melodic ideas...

Very cool piece overall. Not your abuelo's mambo!

I'm very pleased with Eric so far. Him and I have been emailing the last few days (he's from Serbia). A few notes:

- His tone is quite good. I actually asked him for a muted trumpet part, cause that's what i had on the original sketch, and he delivered both a muted trumpet part and unmuted trumpet part. I ended up liking the unmuted trumpet better.

- As far as the "melodic ideas" , they're mine :wacky: I felt like an honest to goodness big boy arranger, sending him a PDF of the trumpet part's sheet music. I sent it in C not in Bb clef though, cause I don't trust myself with Bb clef yet. Which was fine with him, since he mostly relies on his ears. But speaking of melodic ideas....

- He's already contributed muted trumpet work to the latest piece I have almost completed with Hassan. On that one, I didn't write out his part. i just sent him the mp3 and asked him to solo all over it, not to worry if it is too much. He sent me his soloing. At first I thought was it was good but not great, but then I got down to work this morning editing it, keeping only what was really necessary for the track. After that and some preliminary EQ, I think it sounds phenomenal.

- He's got a friend who can accompany him on trombone, so sometime it the near future we're going to experiment with doing a 2x2 horn section in Salsa style. If that works, that'll be very interesting.

Remote sessioning: not my ideal, but looking to be the next phase for me on my quest for a live swinging sound.

Thanks for providing feeback
