London people...

As an American lead who visits periodically, I've found the London dance scene to be very lively. There alway seem to be a lot of events during the week. And there's always SOS on Sundays. I've used Toan's website as a guide, and I've never been able to visit all the different events.

When in Rome ... errrr I mean London ... :) I don't go to London expecting a high level of Latin culture or Latin dancing, that would be silly but the thing I like about the London scene is that the British seem to really like different types of partner dancing and many of the follows I've met have experience in these other partner dances, which can make the Salsa dancing very interesting and fun. For me that's why I always seems to end up enjoying dancing in London.

London has hundreds of Salsa nights on and it depends on what you want to do, any given night there will be classes aplenty and loads of places you can visit. In terms of live music we also have quite a bit. Floridita always have live music, Roberto Pla used to have a regular Friday gig, Salseology play in London probably every other month. There is seriously something for everyone.

Oh and remember that I only know the Crossbody scene, the Cuban scene is also quite sizable and the Cali scene is starting to push...

So yeah, London at the point is still my favourite city to dance Salsa as there are places literally every day of the week and the weekends are normally full of events.

London Salsa Events only lists events, check out www.londonsalsa.co.uk for a full listing and to see all the things happening.

A few years ago I got into a dispute over whether London is some sort of salsa capital of Europe/the world. My point was - and probably still is, from what you wrote - no matter how wonderful certain people and events may be, if there's little on on an average weekend, there's no way the scene can be considered as amazing. That's no slur on the people who do attend events and the events that are actually on, but it seems there's not much on in London.

I also can't help but notice that when I was down there and I stumbled across a great band playing live, I could see literally no salsa dancers present. Admitttedly they were only a duo and there wasn't much space to dance, but the duo are very danceable and they were trying to get people to dance. (I think when someone wants to dance they usually give off signals to say as much, and I didn't notice anyone with that look, but maybe I missed someone.)

It would be a bit daft to claim London as the Salsa Capital of the World - I suspect your debating partner was having fun with you.
We would have to be talking 'Outside the Americas' to make the case more interesting.
I am aware that the scenes in Sydney/Melbourne, Seoul and Singapore are lush but whether they are as good as London, I am not sure.

Certainly in Europe I can only think of the Parisian on2 and Cuban scene that is just as good if not better than London in terms of level of dancing - but not in terms of scale.
Scale-wise, Nordrhein Westphalia could be compared to London but the level is lower across all styles.

If you want to ignore Sunday as well as the week nights and apply your slightly arbitrary measure of 'how many weekend parties', again London offers a surprisingly wide choice in any given month (surprising because Fri/Sat are all about the money i.e. drinking):
There is Salsa Fusion, El Grande, AfroLatina, Bloomsbury, the Caramelo parties, the Salseology nights, Mambo City (ULU) and, most recently, the utterly delicious Vinyl nights.
Add to that the hardcore Cuban parties.
Add to that the Colombian party scene in SE London, including Tito's which caters to the Latino/Cali party crowd every Friday night.
Add to that the various local parties and smaller gigs e.g. in my neck of the woods you got the Pexava socials in Ealing and a variety of busy nights in places like Kingston.

So when you say there is 'not much on in London', actually we're doing alright.

Your second point about not enough hardcore dancer attending one-off live concerts, that's got some validity precisely because there is so much other, tantalising stuff on.
I am very hopeful that the brilliant success of Salseology encourages other bands and concert promoters to engage in direct dialogue with the dancer community so that there is greater overlap between dance and live music events.
My personal view is that for London to become truly a Mecca for Salsa, that dialogue would have to evolve considerably.
All in good time.

Meanwhile I am happy to gorge myself on the irresistible offerings of the Best Salsa Scene in the World.
(Outside the Americas. Probably. Helps if you know how to use the Interweb thingy.)

Sounds good. When I enquired on here a few years ago I discovered there was nothing on on the weekends I was around, which was confirmed by my contacts down there, but it sounds like things are considerably better now. Hopefully I can see for myself some time.

Incidentally, anything happening 27th and 28th December?

It does depend on one's range and tastes: the more limited, the fewer options and the higher the probability of disappointment as many of the nights I listed are monthly or bi-monthly.

In your case, though, given that you place the emphasis on music (judging by your posts), there should be something good on pretty much every weekend.

The period over Christmas and NY Eve used to be completely deserted, it was the only night of the year when I was happy to venture to Bar Salsa but since recently, you are in luck:

5 Star Christmas Weekend
@the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel Heathrow
Two nights of Parties, 2 days of workshops and Sunday Matinee
dancing from 1pm until 5pm
http://www.mambocityweekend.co.uk/

It's more pricey than the usual night out but in my view, it's worth it.
If you are on a budget you can always go to Bar Salsa, though I would not expect heavy 70s Salsa Dura!

Thanks for the info! My dates are actually 28th and 29th, but I don't think that affects the above info. I've noticed 28th at Mambo City is a tenner and on til 5, which is quite good value. (Although I did hear reports of one of their parties being heavy on the k******, in which case I'll forget it as I'm not a masochist.)

Any SFers attending either of the above?

I went there for one night a few years ago. Nice venue, the music was ok but nothing special at all, and I got refused dances by almost everyone (except those I had come with). This was just before kizomba took over the scene, and a few years ago I did read:

After parties were rubbish with lots of kizomba and house music. Sunday morning I waited for a salsa song since 5am, then I went to bed.

Therefore I would like to go again but at the same time I can't help but be wary. Kizomba is bad enough at the best of times, but when the event has the word mambo in its name that's really having a laugh. I'd travel to Heathrow and pay good money to avoid kizomba, not to get subjected to it.

I think the quote was referring to the Mambo City congress which is in May. Yes, quite a few of us were disappointed that the after party music appeared to be exclusively Kizomba a few years back, not sure about last few years.

This Christmas event is smaller than the 'official' congress but there is a separate Kizomba room so you will be reasonably safe.

But after a certain point there is only one room? And if so, do the promoters live up to their name, or is it mostly kizomba? I might not even be able to arrive until late, and I have no wish to arrive an hour or 2 before it turns into a kizomba special.

From a musical perspective, mambo and kizomba really are at absolute opposite ends of the spectrum, so it's absurd that the latter can even feature at after parties of an outfit named Mambo City.

Btw, is SOS on on Sunday 28th?

At many congresses, there's a mixed music policy for after-parties with reggaeton, kizomba, bachata and salsa (with a lot of romantica stuff) all given an equal weighting.

I've just revisited the Mambo City site and I see the Sunday is actually on til 5pm - I thought it was 5am. I won't be able to get out until night time, so that's out of the window.

Sunday 28th, night time: according to what little online info I can find, SOS will be on. Can anyone confirm please? Surely this will be better than Bar Salsa?
