Jazz/instrumental salsa tunes?

Hey everyone! =)

I'm looking to collect some salsa songs that are more on the jazzy, instrumental side. Any suggestions?

some good jazzy salsa

Tito Puente
Arturo Sandoval
Aruan Ortiz
Eddie Palmieri
Grupo Latin Vibe

Poncho Sanchez (my favorite)

I've got a few compilation CD's I burnt from my collection of instrumental salsa and the track list so far is:

Acid - Ray Barretto
Haitian Lady - Willie Bobo
Roots - Willie Bobo
Sunny Ray - Mambo All Stars
Toby's Mambo - Tito Rodriguez Jr
Cuban Nightmare - Tito Puente
Cuban Fantasy - Estrellas Caiman
Caravan - Eddie Torres Orchestra
Japan Mambo - Tito Puente
Hacha y machete - Alfredo de la Fe
My Favourite Things - New Swing Sextet
Either you have it or You don't - Charlie Palmieri
Welcome to the Party - The Har You Percussion Group
Do you only wanna dance - Julio Daivel Big Band
Silk and Lace - Sonora Poncena
Take five - Roberto Roena
Shirley's Guaguancho - Francisco Aguabella
Clasiqueando Con Rubén - Afro Cuban All-Stars
Silver Trail Mambo - Tito Sierra
Mi Montuno - Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri

That's not all the instrumentals I have but it's the ones I like listening to especially driving home after work and I'm tired and just want to relax.

Amoebaman - excellent list. I have most of those, but am always on the lookout for a few more.

here's a question for you, o.ü - where did you get the info on Hong Kong? I've got everything that La Playa Sextet has published, pretty much, and NONE of their tracks sound like that one, which I also have from two different sources (neither original, obviously).

Here are a few more, just the very best of the best:

Descarga Mozambique - Snowboy And The Latin Section
La Pantera Mambo - La 33 (Latin Garden 2)
Mambo Diablo - Tito Puente
Mambo Gallego - Tito Puente
Night In Tunisia - Sonora Ponceña (New Heights)
Rumbambola - Larry Harlow (Rumbambola)
Descarga Cachao - Tito Rodriguez And His Orchestra (The Afro-Latin Groove - Sabroso!)
Jazzy - Willie Colón (El Malo)
Hustler - Willie Colón (OG: Original Gangster)

That's definitely a great song, which often gets overlooked!

For some other songs that haven't been mentioned yet:

"Picadillo" -- Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri
"Picadillo Jam" -- Tito Puente & Eddie Palmieri
"Hong Kong Mambo" -- Tito Puente
"Boss Trés Bien" -- Quartette Tres Bien
"La-la-la" -- Direct Latin Influence (lyrics but still very jazzy)
"Boranda" -- Sonora Ponceña (lyrics but still very jazzy, esp. the live version)
"Lamento de Concepción" (live version) -- Roberto Roena (lyrics but still very jazzy)
"Carretero" -- Malavoi (lyrics but still very jazzy)

Just a few of my instrumental/jazzy picks:

My ghetto - Kent Gomez & his Orquesta
Guajeo En Dominante - Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers
Mambo Maxims - Bobby Matos
Mambo for Henry - Budda All Stars
Workout (1 & 2) - Papo Felix and Ray Rodriguez
Satin and lace - Sonora Ponceña
Noche de Otoño - Tito De Gracia

Just got a new track the other day and I'm in love with it!

Via - Al Delory

It is on of the smoothest tracks I've heard in a while!

Check out Joel Masacote's first album (featuring "Struggle", a favorite), and be on the lookout for album #2, coming next year. Fantastic tracks on both!

This is officially classified as Latin Jazz, but some of the tracks off of Jorge Emilio Fadul's album "Tambora de Madrugada" is pretty sweet.

Moroccan Mambo by Bob Desena is one of the hottest dance instrumentals...

The version of Cubano Chant by Bobby Shew is super grooving and jazzy.

Is It tasty by Bobby Paunetto is real smooth groover as well. In the same vein Titoro by Bobby Montez is smooth too. I also love the version of Satin and Lace by the Tito Rodriguez orq with a very young Eddie Palmieri taking the piano solo.

Ray terrace's version of Manteca is nice for dancing as well as Barretto's version of Night in Tunisia.

Don't forget about one of the original "Latin-Jazz" or Afro-Cuban jazz tunes "Tanga" by Machito/Mario Bauza. The original version from thr 1940s still swings and sounds great to this day. It also works on the dancefloor in my opinion.

Orquesta Universal has a CD called "New York Salsa" which contains some nice instrumental tunes, i.e. Night in Tunesia, Adelita (10 min) or How Insensitive.

Way too many to mention, as the border area between Latin jazz and salsa is full of terrific music, but I've noticed that whenever I put on "Pick Up the Pieces" by the LA Mambo Combo, people say it sounds jazzy, so t may be what you're looking for :-)

"Apartamento 21" - Willie Colón (Baquiné Angelitos Negros)
"Chinacubana" - Willie Colón (Solo)
"Sofrito", "Mambomongo", "Amanecer", "Afro Blue", "Watermelon Man" - Mongo Santamaría
"Night In Tunisia" - Sonora Ponceña
"Lucretia The Cat" - Ray Barretto

Also there's a nice compilation of Tito Puente's music on Concord/Picante Label. It's "Oye Como Va - The Dance Collection".
