Jazz/instrumental salsa tunes?

That's definitely a great song, which often gets overlooked!

For some other songs that haven't been mentioned yet:

"Picadillo" -- Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri
"Picadillo Jam" -- Tito Puente & Eddie Palmieri
"Hong Kong Mambo" -- Tito Puente
"Boss Trés Bien" -- Quartette Tres Bien
"La-la-la" -- Direct Latin Influence (lyrics but still very jazzy)
"Boranda" -- Sonora Ponceña (lyrics but still very jazzy, esp. the live version)
"Lamento de Concepción" (live version) -- Roberto Roena (lyrics but still very jazzy)
"Carretero" -- Malavoi (lyrics but still very jazzy)

I'm not too sure of how Jazzy La la la and Hong Kong Mambo are. To me they sound more Guaracha than Jazzy. Anyone else agrees?

Can anyone tell me what goes into a song that makes it sound more "jazzy"?

Also-- why does it seem like the earlier salsa classics have more of a "jazzy" sound to it?

The Alegre All Stars (Kako, Charlie Palmieri and a host of other top name musicians) released a bunch of essentially latin jazz (descarga) albums in the 60s. Super swinging renditinos of 'Perdido', 'Manteca' etc...

It's not really dance floor material but it makes for superb listening and is highly highly recommended.

I love Alegre All Stars! I keep trying to use these two in classes, haha:

Some of these are more on the bigger band side of things, but:

Cross Body Groove, Hot Bread - Pulpo
Mambo de la Luz - Orquesta de la Luz
Dance City - Mambo Kings
Tambori, Perla Morena - Spanish Harlem Orchestra
(Rumba Urbana) - Spanish Harlem Orchestra (guaguanco the whole way through, but killer nevertheless)

Here's a modern salsa song by La Maxima.. very jazz oriented
" The Chicken "..and,, a jazz group that makes very few salsa recordings.. Mikata , particularly their cut " Nica's Dream " ..
