How do you feel about Bachata?

Seen in a kizomba group "critiquing" discussion:

"Let's not forget that the worst dancers in the world are bachata dancers!"

Good to know that the BS contempt is universal between salseros and kizomberos :P

Geez, you guys wrote a lot. I will write a few points or my observations.

1. Dancing and dating. I agree with xoc123.

Maybe it's a difference between USA and Europe? I tend to think the beginners will more likely to make a move on dance partners than more serious dancers. It's completely normal if you find instructors married each other and open business together. But just talking about social dancers, We aren't looking for a date. We all have lives outside the dance clubs/schools. The reason we are here to dance is dancing make us happy, and satisfied. Most of the serious dancers that I know in Boston area tend to seperate the dance life and private life. Some of them won't even share phone numbers with you, "I will see you when I see you!". I am the same way. I have two phone numbers, one is for dancing only. Some dance friends do have my private number, but they know which number to use for what reasons. Beginners, some of them enter the field just to hook up with girls..., maybe they will make moves. I won't. words travel fast. I don't want any bad stuff going around about me in the dance circle.

2. Sexual tension during the dance.
It happens. I personally don't get that much but there were a few girls did compare dancing (with me) to having sex. We had those conversations. I know I dance with girls closely. But like I said, I personally don't feel that way often.
The other day, I watched a very strong man dancing with a girl I know. The dance was wonderful. He was an excellent dancer. And he was able to raise her up in the air gracefully and etc... She wasn't thin... Let's just say, she left with a facial expression.

3. Bachata got banned.

There is a HBO documentary about Bachata music. Bachata was originated from the brothels, among prostitutes and their customers. The government banned the dance because it was too popular among the people with the lowest social rank.

4. Sensual dances are mood dances in close position.

If you are coming from Salsa side of latin dance, you dance to the music. But if you are a zouk dancer, dance other sensual dances is nothing new or unexpected.

I have two phone numbers, one is for dancing only.

People still share phone numbers? I consider a social media contact as good as a phone number. You can also use your phone to call directly from messenger, whatsapp, etc over wifi, which to me is exactly the same as calling someone using their own private number since the call rings on their cell phone all the same.

Though because it’s so widespread to share contacts, I don’t have the urge to make contact at all. It’s not like back in the day when you had to exert effort to get phone numbers. After a dance, it’s just “hey, let’s exchange contacts”, and it’s a done deal. No fuss and no worry. I will likely not make contact again since we’ll likely run into each other at some point.

I also actively search for people I’ve danced with on social media and add them without thinking about whether it’s an intrusion on their privacy. Likewise, people search me up too and add me and I’m fine with it, unless it’s someone promoting Bachata, in which case I delete their contact. These days, if you don’t want to be contacted, you set your profile to private or unsearchable.

As for separating dance life from private life, as a single person, I consider them to be one and the same. If someone contacts me, it’s likely going to be about dancing, so I have no reason to have separate numbers since dancing is literally life.

Interestingly, I was speaking with a seasoned zouk dancer and he said the lambada origins are making a comeback, that lambada is being revived in zouk.

As for BS having a lot of zouk influence, I think that's pretty obvious. Bachazouk would be a much more appropriate name.

You want to make the Caribbean people even more unhappy  ? ( by offending 2 group of people's traditional dance at the same time... jks... Zouk is already a bad name as it is confusing with the original Caribbean dance, need to emphasise on the "Brazilian", the only thing zouk about it is the counting going with the beats in zouk music which is different to Lambada, since the dance has lost it's music nowadays it is danced to anything with a 4 beat, hence I always find the musicality in the dance a bit meh... Kizomba music work really well too - there is a lot of cross over in the music - not gonna go into it, in parties when they play Kizomba with not enough kiz dancers zoukers will go for a spin... anyway I think they are actually smart to disassociate with the already controversial naming of Brazilian Zouk.

And some DR people are also not happy but at least it is dancing to pop bachata music and have that beat... so at least calling it BS only Dominicans can be offended..

Agree again.

Standard Brazilian zouk dance to the beats with "slow, quick, quick~~~" moves. Kizomba mostly just dance to the beats. if you forget about the slow quick quick pattern, you can dance zouk to kizomba music.

That happens a lot here. My friends always ask me, "is this kizomba or zouk music?" My answer is always: "You can do whatever if you are good enough to dance to it."

What can I say? Do you have any idea how many Chris sell guns, drugs, or dance salsa in Boston area? Can't have all of them on one phone.

I just watched this movie yesterday. I hope this poster is suitable for this thread.

This is definitely different in Europe. Mever heard about this before :P

EU needs to evolve from the cave age!

I have one phone number for on2 dancers, other for on1, a different for dancers who dance linear (i.e. WCS) and those who dance circular (no explanation needed). A few more, but those dances are beyond the scope of salsa.

I have one phone number for sensual dancers. I don't know what sensual dancer means but just in case.

I also have a phone number for BS dancers. But it is a fake phone number.

You cheapo EU people need to stop being stingy and invest in more numbers.

In US they have this magic thing called voicemail. It's like monologue in the box. Crazy!
So I set it up with a spoken message - "please don't leave me voice mail, I'm not using it".
Some time later a friend tells me - "I can't leave you a voice mail, it says -

- the box of voicemails is full!"

A lot of spam calls about car warranty, tax authorities threatening, etc tend to fill up the vcmail box quickly. There are atleast a couple of spam calls a day. Since earlier month I have started to get spam text messages. About one every five days.

A long session of connected, sensual -- meaning, connection at all levels, not just physical -- dancing (preferably kizomba ;) ) with an intimate partner leads to absolute fire in the bedroom...

Exactly why the better you are at generating those feelings through dance (beginners can't do this unless it's just grinding but advanced dancers can evoke much stronger emotions ) , the more dangerous you are, even with complete strangers lol.

Lol well then we can always just call BS: the bullsh*t dance, I think that name would fit great and then BSers wouldn't be offending any Caribbeans :D

So BS conversations would be like:
Hey, wanna go dance some bullsh*t tonight?
Sure, let's go bullsh*t dancing, I heard there's an awesome bullsh*t DJ at the new bullsh*t party tonight!

Exactly why the better you are at generating those feelings through dance (beginners can't do this unless it's just grinding but advanced dancers can evoke much stronger emotions ) , the more dangerous you are, even with complete strangers lol.

Case in point: was at a weekly kiz party in Paris last night, danced with a guy who is very sensitive to connection, like me. A soft (traditional kizomba) music set was on and my partner went into douceur dancing -- that's when connection goes through the roof as you are mostly standing in place, eyes closed, and connecting through "micromovements" of the body (for example the lead will gently lead super tiny movements of the follow's back or shoulders) and also, every now and then, just through the breathing (yep that's tantra kiz @TikiTaka :D )

After about 45 minutes of that I wanted to end the session and when you're in that super connected state you are like in a connection trance and want to just keep going, so if one partner wants to end it, it can be a bit jarring to the other partner if if he/she is so "high on connection" that the other partner breaking the connection comes like a bit of a shock.

So I have learned to be super gentle about it, and the best kiz partners I know do it that way also: without breaking the physical connection, you gently stop dancing and give your partner a long hug :) This makes them aware you want to end the dance session but in a more gentle way than suddenly breaking the embrace / stepping away, so the hug a not so jarring way to bring them back down to reality :) So I did that and as we both opened our eyes and looked at each other, my partner had this expression of total connection bliss on his face :) like he was on cloud nine and would have liked to dance together like that for much longer, had I not ended it.

This was only the second time he and I danced btw, so we barely know each other.

So that's tonight's kiz tale, kids :)
