Albert Torres announced the people who qualified last night, and then announced who would be competing on Thursday and who would be up on Friday. Below are pictures of the list of who performs tonight and in which order:

I've seen some videos. My lord did they downsize it from the large stadium...to disney world to now just a small ballroom. Maybe there is a bigger room or something but it has no elements of a "World Salsa Championship" They should simply make the Greece championship the official one. It has an epic feel...prestige (in just over 2 years) and better rules.

Salsa Championship Competitors

Thank you -- Thank YOu -- Thank YOU!

Keep the updates coming!!

They didn't sell enough tickets for their original venue...They had to move their show on very short notice.

I suspect the economy and perhaps visa and other travel restrictions put a hook into many congresses and competitions and events...
I'm listing the info on

hmmm...chinese representing russia, and russians representing china...and I wonder how one becomes a "last minute qualifier" :) ("oh, we met Albert Torres in the lobby and did a bit of dancing for him" :) )..just kidding.. i respect the competition

This is a reply to "ptwist" on the comment - "My lord did they downsize it from the large stadium...to disney world to now just a small ballroom."

Hmmm... isn't it strange how salsa competitions only get smaller and smaller with less participants... and as a result - less audience. While other partner style dance competitions such as swing, ballroom etc... these competitions only get bigger and bigger! Eventually running over several days - competing from morning to night! To me, it seems like salsa competition organizers only focus on the best (higher level) dancers to enter the competitions. The lower level dancers never get a chance to compete at a world competition, or any other high end competitions for that matter.

Even the biggest and most prestigious Ballroom competition - Blackpool - has kids, youth, adults (lower level dancers), adults (high level dancers - Amateur) and pros. As a matter of fact anybody taking swing or ballroom lessons has a place in the competition should they want to enter. This will bring a larger audience and as a result a whole lot more ticket sales! For organizers out there, I'm sure you know that the lower level dancers are the ones who have the biggest following... Its sad that salsa does not have a structure (gradings) in competitions, therefore can only cater for high level dancers. Low level dancers never get the chance to feel what it is like to get a placing or win a competition (in your division). Salsa needs to prepare the future high level competitors by giving the low level competitors a chance to compete and win within their categories at respected and high end competitions such as World competitions!

An example - Lets say a Latin ballroom youth couple wins their division - eventually if they continue competing and continue to win their division... Imagine how experienced this couple would be when later entering the Adult division (amateur) and then later on perhaps even turn pro! This would most likely secure that the dancers will continue to dance and push to hopefully excel in the higher divisions. Hopefully one day when salsa dancing gets a proper universal structure for competitions (and in general as well) it will flourish and have huge audiences...

Any thoughts anyone...??

Sorry, this comment should maybe be on a whole new thread... :-/

You raise some excellent salient points... It should add ( if really wants to branch out..( organisers take heed ) some Pro / Am. divisions like we do in the B/R world ( age categorised ) ..

Mixed nationalities is not uncommon in the Comp. world.. the " male " is the deciding factor, and has to meet ( normally ) residential qualis.

If you think this is odd.. check out the natn. of the U.S. B /room couples !!

Son, the WSF does exactly that! We have Salsa competitions in Bronze (newcomers,bronze1 bronze2, open bronze, etc.) Silver, and Gold, all age classifications, Pro/Am and Am/Am. It hasn't caught on as quickly as we would like due to politics and the resistance to competition in general in the Salsa community. However, we have made significant progress and hope to globalize it even more for 2010

On2: Louis and Anya take the first place in on2 division! not surprising though I was expecting them to get there one of these days. But I don't think Oliver and Luda were competing this year. Didn't find Junior and Emily mentioned in Shakas tweet in the top 3.

On1: Cristian and Liz first place, Eli and Yen second. Shaka's tweet says Eli and Yen should have won. I am guessing it must have been a very close competition. Though the scores are 87.44 and 85.93 respectively.

Team division: Cali Colombia teans 2nd and 3rd (defending champs). Mexico team takes 1st. Crowd doesn't seem to be happy.

sorry, that was just atrocious. a facsimile of a copy of a copy.

Yeah..but at least one team outside of cali colombia danced in their style. Give them a couple of years and they might start giving the real ones run for their money :)

Looked more of an exhibition to me than a competitive routine.

In my opinion one of the best if not the best routine on1 or on2 of the whole competition... loved it from start to finish. Had a little bit of everything and was just a beautiful routine in my opinion.

It is amazingly precise. It is sharper than anything I've ever seen, the result is that it has a certain robotic feel to it.

Can someone please explain why Anne and Anichi didn't win the on2 competition?

Imo it was great. THey have the feel of Junior and Emily with their intricate moves and crowd pleasing appeal. I loved their section towards the end where they were doing endless amounts of hand tosses and the crowd started to cheer them on as they kept nailing them.

My first critique just from a fan perspective .... they had great body movement...however in their partnerwork..given the difficulty, seemed a bit rush. Couple times where the follower spins and is swaying to a particular side. They did have the best routine for the On2 finals imo.

ALthough in Luis and Anya's routine if you take a close look towards the end there was a slight hesitation, and an instance where they had to keep up with the song.

No routine was perfect. But Luis and Anya executed their routine the best and probably had the best technical scores as well.
