Is it best not to think too much?

(Just reading this now after using the search function instead of starting a new thread.) This is a HUGE issue for me. Do have any suggestions as to the best way to overcome this as it specifically relates to dancing? In my case, it is a particular issue in group classes in which I stick out...

    Breaking up with your teacher

Thanks for this answer (and everybody else too, I appreciate your thoughts). I just recently met a dude, pro trained, who I am going to see more, and I think you are right that learning from a lead will be better. What you mentioned about translating weight shifts into a lead is something I...

    Breaking up with your teacher

I guess once a month on average.

    Breaking up with your teacher

It's not that I can't at all, just not well. I have learned a lot, and from zero, but my ability to put it all together with other dancers is still significantly lagging.

Not going to group classes, but thanks for the reminder of the possibility because that might be the addition that I need.

    Breaking up with your teacher

Friends, I am considering switching salsa teachers. But after more than two years. And in a city where a lot of people in the scene know each other. There has been no conflict or bad feelings, I just get the feeling that she doesn't know how to help me with what I need help with. My progress...

Do you believe anyone can dance...?

Can this be overcome without a teacher that is specifically aware of these challenges? I agree with everything said about practice and perseverance, but realistically speaking there has to be a specific strategy to overcome these things, especially when one is not a dancer by vocation. I...

To social dance or not to social dance

Just generally. It's not something you want to think about while your dancing, but if you can work on good posture generally then it will make a subtle but definite difference to your dancing. Same with exercise generally, stretching and building muscle, etc.

To social dance or not to social dance

I am in a similar situation, although I have been learning a bit longer. One thing I want to point out that I wish I knew earlier (something I get the feeling that a lot of teachers are forgetting about since it is so far behind them): You should learn how to move your body and parts of your...

Learning with classes vs. on the ground (in a Latin country)

Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate the details. Going to look out for this in the future.

Learning with classes vs. on the ground (in a Latin country)

Right now I am in Mexico City and trying to learn the cumbia-based party salsa that they dance here. In theory, this should be A LOT easier than the On2 that I have practice for the socials. The thing is that all the On2 people are dancers seem to be more or less trained in the same stuff. The...

Learning with classes vs. on the ground (in a Latin country)

What is On3 or home style??? And I speak Spanish, I was just using language as an analogy for dance.

Learning with classes vs. on the ground (in a Latin country)

Has anybody here had the experience of taking classes while also living in a Spanish-speaking country? Sometimes I think that taking classes and then also going out to dance with people makes things more difficult and complicated than they would otherwise be. This is probably not actually the...

    Looks and Managing Low Confidence

I half relate to the theme here, maybe I should start a new thread, but I think there is enough overlap to add an extra layer. The self-confidence theme is the part I relate to, and being an introvert as well (not sure if it was OP who mentioned this part), but not necessarily the part about...

    Exercises for shoulders and abdomen?

Today I started learning some rumba moves, but had difficulty because it required movement of the shoulders and abdomen without moving the surrounding areas (arms and neck, belly, etc.). Are there any exercises that my fellow salseros can recommend? Even more generally, are there exercises...

    Coordination

Maybe I just need to shadow dance a LOT more, but whenever I think that I am ready to dance a combo to music, it just breaks down because either I can step in time or I can move my arms correctly but NEVER BOTH at the same time in time. It makes me think that despite having taken a bunch of...

    Coordination

Can anyone recommend any coordination exercises or ways to practice stepping in time while moving arms for turns? I am still stuck trying to do both at once even while I shadow dance.
