    Books on Salsa

I also wasn't a great fan of Travels on the Dancefloor. I feel that if I wasn't already a dancer and already a fan of the music, I'd be more seduced by the exotic trappings. But I came away with the impression that he wasn't a good writer, dancer or musician, but just thought "this might make a...

    Leader's blacklist

Being a great dancer is no excuse for being a slimeball.

    Leader's blacklist

How very rude. What have you got against his potentially badly injured partner? There could be endless reasons for him to be asked the question - he's apparently taken both separate and unrelated incidents to be a personal affront to his leadership skill, deliberately made to emasculate and...

    Mixing Salsa

While being a consistant complainant about mixing at salsa gigs, this is one area that I have absolutely no problem with at all. This is creative, it doesn't interfere with the flow of the dancers' social night and can offer real wow moments. Mash-ups that stay shorter than 5 or 6 minutes can be...

    Zouk and Kizomba

:) OKay - I'll stop being such an old grouch.

    Zouk and Kizomba

As far as I can see, Zouk is a more interesting dance than Kizomba, but the music is dull and in both cases when done at a lowish level just looks like an end of school disco smooch - you might as well be playing "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc or "If You Leave Me Now" by Chicago. I really wish that...

    Zouk and Kizomba

I just hope that the fad doesn't carry on for too much longer.

You Teach On1, But You Prefer To Dance On2 Socially?

TO my mind there IS no "dictating on1 or on2" all that there is are elements that you choose to connect with and express. For on2 dancers they'll search for the congas, and find them, but in those songs there will also be elements emphasising the 1, so on1 dancers with find those: both can say...

    "Local" salsa bands

Yup - our 9 piece band is regarded as too expensive for most clubs and socials. They want to pay for a four-piece but get a big band sound - which a small band can only do with backing tracks, but then you're really only a glorified karaoke band.

    Buzzing from last night . . .

Sounds familiar. Maybe I was somewhere similar. :) As was MacMoto.

Short guys: how to lead properly?

Absolutely - work these moves in class, but always be aware that there are some moves that a short lead with a tall follow will ALWAYS find hard (and inelegant) at speed, so simply don't try these on the dance floor. Also, remember that this category doesn't include spinning - just moves like...

    Frankie & Eddies's takes: on1 vs on2

*bows to one of the best explanations of why on1 and on2 are both right I've heard" I think it could also apply to Mac users who won't STFU about how brilliant Macs are and how PCs are only for dummies. :)

    Music interpretation/authenticity debate [WAS: Ramblings]

Probably because people were all round them watching and filming. If they hadn't "performed" the watchers would have been disappointed. You can't take this video (or, indeed ANY of the videos of the "clueless salsa gurus" (TM DJ Ara) dancing at congresses when they're being filmed by a crowd -...

    Music interpretation/authenticity debate [WAS: Ramblings]

Dancing to straight R&B is pretty uncommon I'd have said; dancing to salsa mixes of R&B is less uncommon; faster cha cha tracks are often used in beginners classes in order to let the newer dancers practice their very tentative steps to latin music without making them think that they're...

    Music interpretation/authenticity debate [WAS: Ramblings]

I'd also say that there's no difference - and no more musicality in that video - than in a similarly competent cross body dancer, you've just replaced the spins with arm movements and rotation. It's still all learned (you can't just go out there and do that on the dancefloor without begin...

    Music interpretation/authenticity debate [WAS: Ramblings]

I'd add Magna Gopal who spins like a demon, but also has incredible musicality. I'm not knocking DJ Arca, because I suppose his intentions are good, but he's so extreme in his condemnation of everything that it's impossible to take him seriously without giving up dancing. And if those salsa club...

    Music interpretation/authenticity debate [WAS: Ramblings]

Well - those videos didn't impress me particularly. The first is a choreographed dance (this much is clear because there's nobody else on the dance floor and they're facing the front) The kids ... dance brilliantly, but they're kids, dancing choreography. And the superfast cali footwork in...

    Confusion - Double Spins

I dunno about LA-style, but in general on1 cross body style, I'd say that she was right. For a double spin, I'd lead the spins on the 4 and the 6, I'd only lead on the 3 if I was wanting to lead a triple (or more) and on the 5 if I was leading a single turn.
