    Guaracha definition

First time I hear that Guaracha originated in Spain. All flamencologist etc that I know explain it the other way round, coming from Cuba to Spain, being btw the main influence for Rumbas Flamencas. May I ask where you have this from?

When Celia Cruz says Azúcar, what does she mean?

I’ve heard her explain it in 2-3 interviews. It seems that restaurant situation was like the birth of this exclamation. They probably found it funny and from then on - if I recall right - either she told that story in a concert or she just said “azúcar” on stage looking at the person who had...

    songs in 3-2 clave

Wow, that was interesting - and probably lots of work! Thanks for sharing @pietro ! What I would ask myself if it was my library; Are the proportion’s representative or is it just that I myself just react more to 2-3 and that’s why they are more present in my library? Or in case you’re a...

    How do you research Salsa?

I’ll post my list about how I research. And I don’t agree with “Cuban music IS Salsa”, not even the other way round, but I’m not going to start a war with Godzilla who would inhale me before breakfast. :) Give me a couple days, I’m on my trip back home from Spain.

    How do you research Salsa?

You‘re speaking specifically about Salsa, correct? As my research was more in Cuban music, my list would be long, but I haven’t researched salsa itself enough. Here my answer would be shorter and “Richie Blondet” would be a main element. Although I still want him for a Latin music talk as a...

    SALSA! The Movie (1999)

quand-même j’ai pas aimé du tout. Mais c’est une question de goût. J’ai pas aimé Buena Vista Social Club non plus. (Le film, pas le group).

La contraclave as dessert of all clave problems. As if we needed something to make it more complicated!

    songs in 3-2 clave

I was mostly speaking about montunos, which often tend to imitate more or classical-romantic-ostinatos than montunos in the cuerpos. Maelo Ruiz or Eddie Santiago etc have that a lot.

    Salsa + bachata?

Perfect explanation! I would add “tempo” to the factors perhaps?

    songs in 3-2 clave

It is very obvious when you hear Maelo Ruiz songs that the pianists are trying to play clave-neutral montunos, often just eight-notes all the way. Specially in cuerpos

    songs in 3-2 clave

I absolutely agree. We spoke - not long ago - about Cali Santiaguero which is absolute Clave chaos. It’s not fun to play these songs. As pianist or percussionist it’s having to adapt to the mess all the time. Btw, it’s the same thing I hear flamenco guitar players say when they have to comp old...

Guararey de Pastora (aka Guararé or Pastorita) - songo v salsa (v son)

Specially in Changüí. The phrasing with the feet is somewhere in a parallel universe when Cubans dance

    songs in 3-2 clave

The problem is that they all switch to 2-3, that’s what supposedly is not wished. Btw some romantic salsa have KILLER montunos, sometimes it’s worth getting through the honey part until the party starts. :)
