Which Salsa Congresses Or Major Events Do You Plan To Attend in 2015?

Hi guys, me and a bunch of people from my local scene are going to the El Sol Festival in Warsaw this coming weekend.
:)
Cannot give any advice on the workshops to take, iam undecided myself, I probably take the musicality class as well... We are already 4 People from SF that will be there and we try to meet.

Hi guys, me and a bunch of people from my local scene are going to the El Sol Festival in Warsaw this coming weekend. Thought I'd take the opportunity to ask for some advice on which workshops to attend, given the amount of experience here. Schedule is listed here: http://www.salsafestival.pl/workshops/schedule/. Some background:
  • Been dancing LA style since February, pretty active. I dance 2-5 times a week, with a mix of privates, classes, practice with a partner and social dancing (1-3 times a week).
  • Would probably describe myself as an improver (workshops in Warsaw are listed as open/improver/intermediate/advanced) or advanced beginner.
  • Would like to avoid classes consisting mainly of endlessly long patterns and instead focus on technique classes. While I have a decent repetoire of moves I'd rather focus on solid basic technique and smooth execution and partner connection over learning even more moves. Have a pretty big backlog from last weekend's congress anyway...
  • Try not to overload on number of classes. We just had a congress in my city, 4 classes a day over 2 days + parties was fairly exhausting, but manageable (I'm in pretty good shape). Will try to get an hour of two or sleep during the day though - the afterparties go all the way until 10 AM!
Here's what I'm thinking so far:

I'm a bit unsure about Super Mario's intermediate classes, I seem to recall reading his classes tend to be very pattern heavy?

Also to note, I'd like to learn NY style eventually, but not sure when - there aren't more than 8-10 follows in my city who dance on2, so I need to do both styles if so. So prob ditching on2 in Warsaw to concentrate on LA for now.

Realllly looking forward to seeing La Maxima 79 & Jimmy Bosch play together live, among my two favorite current salsa artists/bands!

Would appreciate any and all advice :)
Talal is good. I'd go to Kwenda Lima, everyone raves about him, but it might be packed. Watch Eddie Torres while relaxing. Troy Anthony is good, if that's the one from Houston. If they accidentally put Mek in, he's great.

Thanks for the input. I know absolutely zilch about kizomba so far...gonna start learning it in a month with a private teacher, but for now I'm afraid I'll have to sit out any kizomba classes. Good tip on watching ET :)

Tonight on Salsa Libre party. Anyone wants to share a dance, or a drink? The festival is big, it'll be much harder to meet there.

.. Unless you're huge.. :D

Lars, I think Kwenda would be good choice notwithstanding kizomba shame. Great, inspiring teacher in any dance will make you better in salsa. IMO.

I don't know if I'll have full pass or party pass yet myself, but classes look interesting for sure. I would go to see FM as well to see what Sabrosura is so excited about.

Totally agree that other dances taught by good teachers can improve your salsa! Rumba and afro classes last weekend were amazing e.g., will def do more rumba in particular in the future. FM classes are locks. Not sure if I'll see all the shows yet, gonna play it by ear. Looking forward to a lot of great classes and dancing :)

Warsaw proved itself again as world's best salsa festival. Made me happy. For next year one should book hotels as soon as possible. :)

What did you like? why is it better than other congresses?
According to my facebook feed, it seems that it was a lot about pre-parties:D

I did not attend any pre-parties this year, but last year they were good.

1) Level of social dancing is amazing. Better is only Rostov :D
2) Check the bands: Alexander Abreu y Havana D´Primera on Friday, Jimmy Bosch and La Maxima 79 on Saturday.
3) Workshops, shows, dancing, socialization is balanced nicely.
4) The people. Check #1

There are things to improve. So best is relative to other festivals I've attended or heard about. Also Warsaw festival is getting better each year; not an easy thing to do.

The concerts were amazing! I like Maxima's/Bosch's music better, so for me it was the highlight of the weekend. Dancing to an awesome live band for the first time was such a treat :)

As a relative beginner I was amazed and a little initimidated by the level of the salsa dancers - definitely an inspiration to stretch further. Frankie Martinez' spin class was perhaps the highlight of the classes for me. Both for the technique (no prepping? And it works?) and his personality/social views.

I have a serious Problem with getting enough sleep in. went to bed around 6, but already woke up again around 9 and could not get in more real sleep. Had the same Problem in Riga and Hamburg. I guess my body cant cope with the schedule change.
Anyone taking any "stuff" to help em sleep? Pills, herbs whatever?

Get up, enjoy sunshine, walk in fresh air in the morning. Keep regular meals. Take a nap between 13 till 18ish (the cycles are individual, find what works). Melatonin 20 minutes before sleep for couple days. Depending on local laws you might need prescription, but it has no negative side effects known to me, if you go to sleep right after. If you don't, it will disintegrate in 20 minutes, if you're exposed to light of certain spectra. And you will feel bad during that time.

More advanced would be two or three naps. Space at least 3 hours between them. 1 longer and 2 short (<30min). Take a coffee before nap, it kicks-in in about 20 minutes, so it'll wake you up. :)

Exercise.

Sex.

thanks, I guess I first need to stop booking full passes and just accept that I just cannot do Workshops and partys together. I'll visit my Pharmacy, lets see what they have that does not need prescription. Melatonin seems to be forbidden here...

I'm pretty sure it's not forbidden; just ask any of your doctor friends to write a recipe. There are tons of pharmacists in salsa scene in Riga.

Most of sleeping pills I would not use, they just knock you out and you don't get quality sleep. Melatonin is what brain should secrete itself, but since your schedule is messed up, it thinks it's still a day.

Oh no! The Romanian National Congress has been cancelled for 2016, and I already have my airline tickets. Need to find another event in the general area for the Jan. 23 weekend. (Or just travel around Eastern Europe).
