Looks like you are gonna be a busy man jayzen! Hope I'll get a chance for a few dances with you next year then :)

Hopefully at least a few out of this list...

...
I've just noticed there's also a salsa vacation in Bali in March... tempting!

there should be time for at least a dance in each of the festivals/congresses :P

was there (bali) last year. more a holiday thing honestly unless more visitors go.

local scene is not very mature so don't expect good dancing.

not sure if i'm going this year.

EGYPT SALSA FESTIVAL, EGYPT in October, EGYPT in October!!!:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

DUBAI - third w/e january
MIAMI - end of july
NEW YORK - first w/e september....and it's my birhday... :)
did i mention EGYPT - last weekend in october ;):)

the rest depends on finances and general travel plans. i'd like to do the ALL STAR SALSA CRUISE, PUERTO RICO, AMSTERDAM, ISRAEL and maybe ATHENS...

Definitely Salsafestival Candela & Friends Karlsruhe in February (got the tickets a while ago)

Probably one of the Munich Salsa Festivals (most likely the Summer Salsa Festival in August).

Maybe a third festival in Europe to combine a vacation with, but I haven't decided yet.

Dreaming about the All Star Salsa Cruise, but I'll have to see if I can make it financially - I'd love to go though, especially since it starts on my birthday, it would be a nice present to myself.

Definately thinking about PR, Israel, Amsterdam, Athens, and NY so maybe I'll see you at one of those. Probably can't make Egypt and I have heard horror stories about salsa cruises so I will probably skip that one.

Just curious, but in Egypt and Dubai, are there native citizens who go dancing, or is it all ex-pats and tourists?

no, loads of egyptians and arabs out dancing...probably more than the ex-pats. i've not been to dubai yet, but have met some awesome dancers from there on the congress circuit. egypt has some world-class dancers waiting to be discovered...imho, partly down to belly-dancing (a combination of body isolations and musicality) and the awesome sense of fun here.

a night out in cairo typically finishes at 6am, and people are used to having a good time without alcohol. in the uk, 'party' venues with lots of drinking, like bar salsa (good dancers on mondays & wednesdays & loads of atmosphere), have the danger of getting bumped into and hit on by drunks. whereas 'social' type venues often lack a party atmosphere.

egypt is famous for being laid-back and religiously-tolerant, so most salsa clubs here are in bars, and about half the people drink and half dont - but everyone has a great time! usefully, ('thanks' to the former british occupation) the vast majority of the egyptians who dance salsa speak great english...

slightly less usefully, it takes forever to get anything done here (laid-back, remember!;)) so my web designer, already 2 weeks over deadline is now 'sick'. once he recovers, i'll be posting profiles and video clips of some of the local dancers to entice people... ;) i also got some hysterical footage of leon (rose) mambo-walking like an egyptian, LOL.

Hey, I've got pictures and videos of Leon walking like an Egyptian in Jordan salsa festival held in 2007. Was a blast, wonder if it is the same video I have for him :)

And I ditto Amanda in everything she said about Egypt. Gotta love it. Gotta get addicted to it.

I've been to Dubai on several occasion and the dancing there is great. However the natives are not big on latin dances but there are an amazing few who do dance really well. Other than that, they are usually foreigners who happen to work and live there. Very versatile, very diverse, and very glamorous.

I have noticed that Iranians like LA style above all else even if they have never been to Little Tehran in West LA. Lebanese appear to like all things Cuban. So what is the preference In Egypt or the Emirates ?

{btw: what do Egyptians call "walk like an Egyptian" ?}

Egyptians dance on1... All of them, recently the concept of on2 has been introduced and there are exactly 2 followers and 1 lead who were interested. However I am sure it will grow strong very soon as they are born with beat.

sooner than you think! i gave an 'on2' workshop back in May, and now there's an on2 posse....you're right, i've never seen people pick it up so quickly!

I've been watching a lot of the clips from the SF congress Jack and Jill and it looks like a blast. I might just be tempted to take a trip out west next year.
