"Where were you? Everyone was there."

Frustrated and disappointed does not begin to cover it. :(

I didn't go out last night because in the past six months every single time I've gone to this particular venue it has been dead, except for a handful of guys who are pretty constant everywhere. This venue is also bashed by a lot of dancers for having a sticky floor and rude service. A lot of dancers refuse to go here. I gave up because it's not worth paying for parking and paying the cover to then sit all night or dance with a couple mediocre leads. How many times can I do the same thing before I realize the result isn't going to change and stop doing it?

Apparently I gave up too soon because last night "everyone" was there, including the best of the best. Except me. Why does this happen? I'm totally bummed. Does anybody else have this happen to them? How do you try to prevent it or at least deal with it?

Tried it. If people aren't updating their own, they aren't commenting on others.

This is what I do:
I note the phone numbers of some of the "constants", then I just call them and ask them if there is something interesting going on (or even better, I ask them to SMS me if there are interesting things). You usually have to give them something in exchange (i.e. also send them reports about clubs you go, or if they are beginners you can just promise them a dance, etc.), but it works great

usually there is a buzz in my city (honolulu, hawaii) about a night or two before... people have the itch to go out and start telling everyone else to go out. you start to hear about the event and who's going so from there you get a good sense if it's one of "those big nights"

How did you find out, did everyone suddenly update their fb ?

I've had it happen on occasion, but generally if it's going to be that big there's a buzz about it prior. Was there any particular reason it blew up for this one night? Like a popular dancer's birthday or something? It seems weird that a normally slow place would suddenly have everyone show up for no reason. If there really was no reason, then there's really nothing you can do to avoid having it happen besides being as plugged in as possible, other than that you have no way of knowing the trend is going to be bucked.

What I personally do is just try to give people the hook-up whenever I can. If I come across a good club or social, I tell people about it. Then when they go I introduce them to fun dancers. If I get wind of an event going down at an already established place, I tell people. Generally people appreciate it and make sure to hook me up too. I do still miss things here and there, but I think I'm pretty well plugged in at this point and more often than not I know when the good things are going down.

facebook-add your salsa scene. You'll know, more or less, where people will be on certain nights.

I agree with lurker's approach, making lots of friends (Facebook and otherwise) with everybody in your salsa scene is an effective way to keep up to date about special events and stuff, especially if you connect with salsa instructors and promoters who will typically host said events.

Another way I keep up to date with special events in my own scene (Boston) is that I find all the dance companies and dance venue websites (salsa DJs too) and I sign up for their email newsletters (DJs especially tend to have helpful ones, at least the ones I know). The newsletters will usually announce special events and stuff.

Similar to the email newsletters, I also find dance company and venue Facebook pages and groups to join, because they'll usually post events there too, or just send Facebook events to everyone on their list.

Out of curiosity, may I ask in what city your local scene is in?

Pm sent. But today I might be finding out whether I got one of two jobs I interviewed for in the Boston area, in which case that will become my new salsa scene! Hmmm. I was there last Monday-Tuesday. I think I know why your nickname is ColdSalsero!

Well good luck with your job interviews, and if you end up making it to Boston, let me know and I'll get you up to speed with the local scene real quick, it's HOT! The dancing, not the weather :P
