What makes you get off the couch in the evening and go out dancing?

Besides obvious reasons as music and people expected in the party, I recently recognized that distance to the event might be even more important. I go to the party where I'll probably have 5 nice dances in the evening and don't like music, because it takes me 5 minutes to get there. So I always say 'I can go home any time', but often stay. And party that takes 30 minutes of travel, - I might go once a month.
I know for some people care about dress-codes and will go to fancy events more. Another reason that's popular here is beach parties, we'll go to the sea side even if we know that music and dancing will suck.

There are at least two events a week within 5-10 minutes of drive from my home. I hardly ever go there because dancing sucks - too low level and too many leaders compared to followers. There is also one or two monthly events within 10 minutes travel and I don't attend for the same reason.

If I am dancing at a regular cadence then I don't mind driving an hour for good dancing. That's been most of my dancing in for years. However as I have frequently mentioned the attendance has been low for most of these year. The number of weekly option has increased but there aren't more than 20-30 people. That doesn't make it worth going an hour's drive. Once the cycle breaks inertia sets in. For the same reasons I skipped two pre-pre parties this week. One of them turned out was good and people had good things to say about it. So I missed out on that one.

I do think music and who you might be able to get to dance with, gets about 75%-80% weightage in getting off the couch all things being equal.

I think if we go out, we all want to have a good time. If the likelihood of having a good time diminishes, then motivation to go sags.

What makes me get off the couch?

A pure (or nearly pure) Salsa night and at least ONE person I know for sure will be there. I will travel far and wide for that one dancer.

Going to dance to music I don’t like with people I barely know makes absolutely no sense.

If there’s a big event with lots of people but the music is crap (not Salsa), I will stay on my couch or get up and dance in my room.

If you didn’t already know, I am starved for Salsa.

These days there are not that many salsa venues/events in your typical city anymore.

There are merely two weekly events that are withing 30-40 min drive. If I would expand to an hour drive, I would only get one more weekly. We go to the two weekly events every time.

There is a monthly social that is only 5 min away and I have missed it every time so far. There is another monthly event about 40 min away (with very expensive parking) and I have missed that one as well. Either they are not well promoted or I am not on the fb notification list or I turned off notifications or all of the above.
