I don't know of anyone who thinks it's from Los Van Van.
That doesn't even sound like Los Van Van. Who is the singer? It's not Mayito, Mandy or Lele and certainly not Robertón.
OK now I listened to the original. It is exactly the same song. Both are Miguel Enriquez,. Los Van Van has not done a cover of this. Not sure why that DJ put Van Van's name on it in his YouTube upload. No way anyone could mistake that sound for Van Van's music.
I fully agree! And still I met some people telling me this!
Only thing I found is that there's also sheet music for this song you can buy where it's listed as Van Van song too. No idea about the background.

In any case, it sounds great being so popular that other hits are attributed to one even when it's clear your band sounds so different. I would have nothing against getting there one day.

It's really not the same. Atmosphere, context, sound quality. There are bands which I love live and never listen recordings more than once, and other way around - love recordings, but will not go to show again.They have a "live" concert stream tomorrow night for their 10th anniversary. With regard to timba, probably many people enjoy the chatter they do, while for me it destroys the magic that could be created by music. And so on. Also playing with band, or singing and dancing along is different as just listening.
During first covid era, when I was mostly sitting at home, I watched many concert videos. Now, when I can see and hear real stuff, I stopped using YouTube. Same for dance videos, I stopped watching them as real dancing restarted.
It's strange how it works. I was willing pay entrance, travel to Random Peruvian village, spend time in Lima to see Mayimbe (and I did visit Lima, but they cancelled the gig), but I'm not willing to spend couple hours of my life to listen to recording, because it's shiny outside.
I hitchhiked through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia during the night, including 40km with taxi to arrive to Tromboranga gig 15 minutes early to hear Ah Caraj live and dance to it. But at home.. not the same thing, I don't listen to it much.
There I fully agree. I was at one Charanga Habanera show in Switzerland where it was just painful, we didn't stay the whole concert. But most of the talking was between the tunes, just a never ending public flirting from David Calzado with girls from the first row, I think half the audience got fed up.
That could be a nice thread - songs that make we want to go home.
In my case, any version of Bamboleo (the song) = bye bye, at least for the duration of the song.

I have just finished watching a Doc. about the emergence of 60s music titled Laurel Canyon and I think this would appeal mostly to you. It is FABULOUS Every artist you can name from that period is featured.. It is long (in 2 parts ) . I had forgotten how amazing those artists were just something I took for granted at that time..
