Warning: Uncontrolled Styling Is Hazardous to Dancers' Health

Last night, during the last few hours of the NY Salsa Congress, I nearly had my right eye poked out by a woman who decided to "style" by suddenly and forcefully extending her arm behind her without any awareness of who or what was behind her--in this case, what was behind her happened to be my face, so her hand smashed directly--and very painfully (for me)--into my right eye. Luckily, reflexes kicked in immediately and my eye closed just before her hand made contact with it, otherwise it probably would have been severely injured. So the result was "only" severe pain in my eye and being unable to open it for a while without tears starting to flow uncontrollably from it. It seems okay now, thankfully (this happened about four hours ago), but in the minutes after the "accident", as I was collapsed in shock and pain on the nearest chair with my hands around my eye, I feared for it. (The "styling" woman didn't even bother to come over and see if I was okay or needed help.)

On to my main point: what kind of idiot--strong language is warranted in this case --thinks it is a good idea to "style" by throwing her arms behind her with complete lack of awareness of and disregard for the other dancers around her--especially while dancing on a crowded floor???! Is this what people get out of "ladies' styling" classes?! To "look cute" above all else, other dancers be damned?!

To dance instructors: please tell your students, both men and women, to be mindful of the possibility of severely injuring someone if they dance without paying attention to how their movements might affect the other dancers around them, and that having good spatial awareness and movement control involves more than just taking small steps when the floor is crowded--because uncontrolled movements of their arms can still cause injuries.

And, to women in particular: just because you are dancing with a lead who has good floor awareness and is careful about protecting both you and the people dancing near you, does not mean that you can let go of all spatial awareness--you still need to control your own movements and dance responsibly. The lead has no way of preventing your arms from "styling into" someone's face!

I'm sorry that you had that incident

Personally, I'm not a fan of that b/room latin kind of styling by extending arms in salsa at all, and even in latin, we were taught to extend our arms within our angle of vision and not behind the back and can't remember anybody smashed the hand against a face of other dancer on the competitions or training

You said it happened during the NY congress right ? I would say it was intentional; she wanted to send you off the floor in order to steal the spotlights... :troll:

Yep, floorcraft is everyone's responsibility.
Sorry to hear about your injury, at least it turned out to not be serious.

I nearly got my eye taken out by random styling at sos yesterday.

I also saw a girl nearly dip her finger in some passing guys drink - both were oblivious!

I am glad you are ok although sad that you need to return the parrot and eyepatch. Poor polly :(

In empathy, my night at Taj last night:

Arrive then pay $15 entry.
Listen to one song taking in event. Looks like bumper cars.
Asked to dance by cool NYC local girl who I think is super sweet so get dance space and I JUST do CBL and RT almost on the spot. Mainly closed hold grooving taking up no space. MORON (trumps idiot) NYC lead dances next to us and decides the crowded floor is appropriate for all manner of lifts, dips and the worst, going on one knee in our dance space. After giving him numerous dirty looks after taking several shots to protect my partner, he continued and then hit my partner. I almost lost it and wanted to confront him so I instead protected my partner human shield style as much as possible. I apologised for the lack of common courtesy by our dance neighbour.

He really ruined the night so I sensed this and tried to overcome it thinking I should not let him get to me. I sat out one song to cool down and was standing in place off the dancefloor in clear space. Yet another couple managed to step on my feet twice.

So I left. $15 - $5 per song and probably $1 per hit.

I should have used the $15 for a boxing lesson or proper dodgem car night...

I shall not return to the Taj. I am shocked and dismayed at that lead and the eye poke girl as both MUST have known they hurt others yet did not even apologise/check if we were ok :(

Tough night, sorry :(

I was too tired to go anywhere last night, but I thought everyone went to Taj last night for the New Swing Sextet concert, was there a post-congress party at Cache?

In all my times of going to Cache I have never seen anyone dancing with lifts, tricks and knees, are you sure that (non)dancer was a local?

Hey, sorry. It was Taj. I should not message without sleep...
Yes, it was a NYC ha ha. Don't be in denial ;)

Ooooh, I know who it is--I forgot about him; he is the only guy who dances like that here, as far as I know (more like LA style than NY style). Every time I dance with him I warn him: "No neck drops!" :p

Must have been from London :headphone: :muted::wacky:

Neck drops are not allowed in NY style ? :)

Neck drops should not be allowed in *any* style. I still remember the first time I saw that guy do a sudden neck drop with a girl two years ago, at Veranda, I was terrified by how dangerous it was, and made a point to always remind him he can't do that with me. He's a good lead but all it would take would be a split second of something unexpected happening when he does this and the follow's head would crash into the floor. Salsa dancing should not mean a follow has to risk a hospital visit.

I beg to differ, there is a neck-drop "expert" at SOS that people in the know avoid like the bubonic plague

Thanks for making my point :p

I actually enjoy dancing with our resident neck dropper, he is a bit rough, but he leads surprising, playful moves and can make me do things I didn't know I could do, which *always* makes the dance fun for me :).

Saw someone try to do a neck drop once at the LA congress, and missed the girl, I need not go into greater detail, but I am sure she had a headache for a long time!!!. Neck drop in New York, what is this world coming to? I don't think it has a place in social dancing, also in my experience neck droppers take up too much space when they social dance. Next time I'm in New York I want to meet/see "The neck dropper", Hope he's not the dude with happy feet (or smiley face feet)

Nope, he is the dude with Vibram "toe shoes" :) (which is actually a great idea--he put suede soles on them and says they are the best shoes to dance in).
