Training Strategies

In your experience what has been more helpful ?

I train about 1 1/2 hours per day and I am hoping to allocate the time in the best possible way.

My questions are?

How should allocate the different parts of dancing: isolations, timing, footwork, spins, styling, partner work, ballroom choreography, ballroom body technique ( I just started in competitive ballroom too)

Should I train one subject per day, or should I do a combination of them ?
Should I train the same subject every day or should I leave a day in between ?

Hi Piel. For me it has been to prioritize what I'm having the most trouble with. For me it was partnerwork, still is actually. I was fortunate to not have trouble with timing, rhythm or isolations so my focus was on partnerwork, then limited styling and spins. But I would just focus on whatever aspect of dance is hindering you the most at this time. Then once you're satisfied, move on to the next. :D You probably already know this but video taping will help alot! Maybe video yourself and your partner dancing. No choreography, freestyling for maybe three songs and you could a pretty good feel of how you need to allocate your training. Individually and as partners. :)

Marinate the noodles

Definitely leave some days in between and do something different.

Let the training mentally marinate.

Physically you are probably used to dancing and moving good anyway.

Oh and as far as your training schedule, I saw that you were training for competitive ballroom, how long do you have until your next competition? Depending on when the competition is, that would also affect how much you train and when.

first competition is in November, at the Ohio nationals. I am also dancing for a salsa dance company, just started with them about 3 weeks ago, so I have a lot of training to acomplish. :?

Piel : Do u have other activities besides dancing ?? hehe!!! BUT it's all good!
In my opinion, should concentrate one dance/technic/etc per day/hr
So that u can master whatever yr working on during practice.
Working on too many things at 1 1/2 hr can be confusing and stressing yrself out.
When i prepare for shows, usually practice 2 hrs a day, or every other day.
Depending on what area u need more to practice,
eg: isolation, u can start first without yr partner being there ( i do that at home, or whenever i get a chance to isolate)
When i meet up with my partner we can go straight to partner work. Don't have to waste time. From there u can master yr footwork or technics, spins, etc.
One more thing, don't over trained you'll go crazy!
Relax take 1 day off, u will come back like the BOMB!
You know what i mean :P

Good luck for yr first ballroom competition!
