Too Many Women!

Recently we have the opposite problem. We seem to get more men, even at the beginner level. But we are a super small area, where flukes are the norm, I guess.

On the contrary,, kids classes in the UK ( 4 - 13 ) do very well ( that's how I got started. ). I did mail them as a last resort .

This is different. Kids are subscribed by their parents who also choose the class/teacher. High school students are old enough to decide for themselves where they want to go. Maybe we mean different things by high school.

And, I don't drink, so pubs for me are not an option. I did advertise in one in the recent past, but no interest shown. I actually, about 3 years ago , got a salsa class going, then guess what, the owners closed the pub !!.
Also, the majority of pubs seem to have their spaces rented out for karaoke and the like .

You don't have to drink alcohol in order to give a class in a pub. I did not mean to hold the course there but just a one-time trial lesson to attract them to wherever you have your regular classes. Bring your female students and maybe the guys will be interested to try.

To give you an idea how it seems to be elsewhere in the UK, just read DJ Yuca's posts, about the lack of interest in salsa, and he lives in a major city..

I know the situation there, at least from a few years back. It's not exactly a tiny place and there are two universities there. I would not say that there is a lack of interest in salsa per se and lack of guys in classes. It's more lack of quality classes with strong promotion.

Pls send your extra followers to my city, where men outnumber women 2:1 at classes and socials.

In response to your question -- if you can get just one male friend to get hooked, he might bring more. In my experience, every time I've gotten a guy to come with me to a salsa class, he's brought other guys: "No, seriously, bro -- you get to dance with all these women." However, I've mostly lived in larger cities. I can't imagine trying to get dudes in the small town where I'm originally from to come to a dance class, because that's not something they think "real men" do.

Those things are somewhat successful in larger towns/cities, but, that excludes many small locations/ areas,, like the one in which I'm currently teaching . ( I sent Prof done posters to the 5 high/middle schools, within a 3 mile radius. not ONE response) .I've advertised in local weekly papers , "throwaway" weekly's, and the "net " ( In salsa and B/room ) .
This is one of the lowest response times I've experienced ,over multi years of teaching. (And don't say "move " , have done that 3 times, in a very short time period ) .

Hi Terence
In my humble opinion 3miles radius for a non-city area is not enough. I travel up to 1 hour for a good dance night and sometimes near 70km. Also need to see if there is a local facebook (for the young) for dancing or start one yourself where you advertise events/lessons. It is difficult, and I have to admit that one of the ways mentioned is used heavily here in Italy. Scandalously dressed ladies or stalone-type guys not only on posters but also at the nights (in fairness some of them are good dancers). I don't like it but ... In addition, I agree with the age comment. I was amased when someone told me that he did not want to join the rueda group I go to because most of the dancers are too old.

I certainly do not wish to dance with a lead who took up salsa because of a penchant for or expectation of scantily clad women.

NOT on the posters I have had done for me. I guess I'm of a different era ( stone age  ) . The reasons people come for lessons are numerous, but, near the top, location convenience and the time/night.

That has been a problem of late. Virtually no night choices, but one .For some reasons, Tues and Wed. nights work very well, the 2 nights I have yet been able to secure .As of now, I only have a Mon. night .

.

The miles travelled , does not seem to affect my BR students, but with salsa, I'm competing with long established venues, that are a fair distance from me......
and the closest larger city area, is about 30 plus miles away. There is a mid sized town that's halfway between my location and that city, that I'm seriously considering for a "move " early next year .

People always opt for convenience ( and why not ) .And for the few classes that I have held, all were well over 40years. That's not a complaint, but an observation. . I even take singles in all the genres that teach, but, they do not last longer than 4weeks ( boredom sets in. for many, even tho I do dance with all of them )

I remember well, when I was in my very early teens, I would travel ANY distance to"dance " socially..

:)

Yes, I imagine so for the majority of people. With you, too, taking advantage of a wealth of experience and great teaching :).

Sometimes they use shoes or congas or something boring like that :D

The one thing they( prospective students ) NEVER seem to check, is Qualif... There is an assumption in the general populace , that , if someone advertises a class, the advertiser MUST surely know what they are doing ,to produce "dancers ".

And, that's not to say that a Qualif. is a guarantee of good teaching.. but, it should be a guide, and , part of the evaluation.

How can there ever be to many woman?
And who's complaining anyway? ;D
I agree, I prefer there to be more women in the class, as the guys need extra practice. It helps them too, to be part of the rotation more often, but they exposed to a lot more variety, as for us it depends on our progress, and motivation, with lots of practice with socials along side the classes.
