Timba? Or...?

A DJ in Zurich played Dificil - Jorge Villamizar (tried to link but can't when below 10 posts) and it struck me as sounding very much like Timba but after looking it up, he's Columbian and none of his songs sound like Timba at all. Is it something particular Timba-ish about this song or is it just me?

Any opinions?

I have another version, so cant comment on this one..

It doesn't sound like timba to me but has mixed influences, which maybe lends one to think of timba. Descemer Bueno is Cuban of course, but not specifically associated with Timba and Sergio George is the arranger. I'd say the horns have a certain "cubanish" sound.

Hmm, yeah, I wasn't sure if it was Descemer Bueno's influence or what that made it sound Cubanish to me. It's also the reggaeton towards the end that pushed it over the top for me and made me throw it into my Timba folder on my computer even though I know this is technically wrong.

I'm not sure if there's more reggaeton or cumbia in it. the rap at the end per se doesn't make it reggaeton, since they've done just rap in salsa before. But there's definitely something "bouncy" in the arrangement that make sit sort of cumbia-ish or reggeaton-ish to me. I can easily see that dancing reggeaton would work.

The bass has a strong emphasis on the 3 and 4 of the beat, resembling the presión in timba or the style of groove used by Berna Jam for example (see: Y Ahora Baila). That might be giving the immediate association with timba. And then there is the voice of El Mola, which makes it sound quite cuban. I don't think calling it timba is all that far off :)

Oops. Missed El Mola ;)
