This Week's Project

Chord beats. What are they? They are 1..3..5..7
The Project? Shines and chord beats. Determine how many ways to get in and out of chord beats while doing shines whether you're dancing On1, On2, On10, On15, whatever. ;) Report back you're findings. This weekend would be a good start particularly those who have trouble when it's time to "shine". Happy dancing Salser@s.

Maybe I'm missing something but shurely there's two ways:

1) with the left foot
2) with the right foot... ?

maybe I am missing something after all

There are 8 ways
With the left foot on 1, or 3, or 5, or 7, and with the right foot on 1 or 3, or 5 and on 7

 ah, it seems it's much subtler than I thought!

I'd be happy to report back my findings, if I knew what findings I was supposed to find . I'm a bit of a 'nice but dim' person :D. Give me a clue ;)

Your findings could be anything really. You may find that you hate them, you may find that you can work easier into a certain move, you may find that it throws you off beat, you may find that it confuses your partner, you may find that it may or may not work with the music you're dancing to, etc., etc., etc. Good exercise for those who hate shines as well.

Okay this week's challenge is the mastering the Rumba step. Try to really focus on the body movement to enhance the sabor. See example video clip here :arrow:Fundamentals of Rumba

I got it!!! I have been trying to figure it out for a year! I even rocked it when I went out this weekend. When I did it the guys eyes lit up and then he started doing it too, so I guess I did it right! On the other hand terence just said it was appaling so now I dont know... but that I liked the way the lady on the clip did it. that was the look I wanted, im not sure how the "proper" teaching technique should have looked.

Glad you got it, Akbernier! :D I don't think it was appauling at all which is why I posted it. ;) The beauty of it is it's informality and the rawness which is in "street" Salsa/Mambo. Sometimes, over analyzing body movement causes mental blocks to where you can't "get it". As Boriken says, "See it with the Soul, not the Mind". Anyone else?

hmmm, I was telling a friend that night that I am almost sorry I learned in a studio because sometimes its hard for me to just go with it. I go to this place on Friday nights where there arent many studio trained dancers but quite a few street dancers and they are amazing... I could watch them all night and wish I had thier flava.
when i came up dancing to hip hop/r&B no one had to say ok, on 2 your foot should be here and at this angle... I watched and did it and the music automatically made my foot end up there and who cared what angle.
this lady was teaching me a shine and she was so shocked tht she didnt have to teach me the body roll, by counts... I was thinking to my self.. the worm? Pshhhh I've been doing that since middle school. 1980-ish.

so I do respect the fact that I needed to learn the basics by counting, to get the correct technique but when its time to get "street" I need to learn it like im on the street.

I think Im rambling so I'll shut up now.

Exactly! Akbernier! Some things about dance just can't be taught in a studio, with a coach or private lesson in my opinion. Totally agree. :D

Was not talking about the performance-- only the way that the explanations were given to achieve the result .

As far as authenticity is concerned -- no one is more on that side of things , than I-- if you read my posts-- its my mantra !
