This week in my dancing I'm working on...

getting back to a regular practice schedule after having been lazy the last weeks. Next to a few other aspecs, the last shines compilation has been a good source of motivation to take my dancing to the next level. :)

Trying to get back to the gym. I gained a lot, since the shutdown!!
the spins for salsa dancing are slow if I've put on weight.
Need to loose. first thing is admitting it!!
next step--> plan!!!! lol

I really need to work on my spotting. Yesterday I could spin two and a half rotations, I finished facing away from my follow. It's difficult to look cool when it appears you've mislaid my partner.:wacky:
But today I can spin 3 rotations, problem solved.:)

For some reason this weekend my coin drop was failing. After the lady's hand slid off my shoulder, my right hand was dangling in space, waiting, waiting for someone (hopefully my partner) to take it. So as a styling move , I checked my wristwatch on my left hand - watching the seconds pass. I wondered if maybe her back was to my back and we were both staring in opposite directions waiting for the other one to make a move. Or whether my partner saw a friend on the sidelines and walked off to say hello. It was mystery that happened a few times that night. When I finally left the club I noticed that in changing shirts an hour prior (anyone else do that move?) I had put my shirt on inside out! So probably what was happening was that my partner was trying to read the label. All night long. The good thing was I learned a useful "check the wristwatch" styling move!

This week I decided I need to start taking classes again. I've beed dancing for 2,5 years now and recently dropped from classes. I miss the crowd and I don't think I am at the point yet when classes are not of a value.
Also this week I work on musicality - just listen to salsa music at home every night and improvise on my own, see where the music takes me. My styling is somewhat stiff and these exerices help ot express myself in a more natural way.

Going back to shoulder isolations.

I want to be able to isolate nothing BUT my shoulders, no rib cage action, no hip action, and absolutely no flailing my arms about.

When I see guys execute this properly, it looks nice and clean. It seems I can do it with my hands on my hips, but when they leave my hips, my arms start to flail.

Posture during partnering and shines (keep shoulders back and down, lats engaged).
Arm movement during shines -- natural but controlled.

In salsa, the shoulders need to be in an embrace position ( slightly rounded NOT back ).. create this effect, by moving arms to a more forward, neutral position. This creates a more natural approach.
What you describe, is essentially a B/room position .

" Latin " posture/frame, is conceptually different, than the B/room version ( which is seen , unfortunately , in most eurocentric dancers ) .

Shoulder mobility and integrating arm and shoulder movements. Specifically when my arms are raised. I want my lead for an outside turn to flow more from the body through the shoulder into the arm. Not only are my shoulder tight, but my left has noticeably less range of motion.

Also I need to correct a tendency I have to lift my big toe off the floor when I walk.

Working on spinning (solo, on a raised foot, center of gravity, all that stuff). . . never learned to spin in salsa since I only dance Cuban style, but it's a skill I should have at this point.

Also this week. . . gliding, arm waving, some fancy columbia footwork, speed and coordination in casino hand styling/alardes, elegua, chango, plus the basic steps of a few Cuban bailes campesinos. A grab bag of stuff, now that I look at it. But with this variety I can keep going for 3 hours a day, moving from exercise to exercise to rest muscle groups -- and the mix keeps me engaged!

Well the past couple of months I discovered skillbuilding through you tube and more recently salsa videos. I discovered a "pay per view" style website that sells lesson clips and couldnt be happier. Specifically because I uncovered the secret to those ladies styling, hair combs/ pizza/ arm wraps that I was not getting in my previous classes. Falling upon these videos is like a new dress you cant wait to put on and wear out night on the town. So Ill be trying all my new styling tricks on the floor this week as well as surviving a Jack/Jill contest.

Very funny.. LOL !!

Made some decent progress with shoulders. Now working on back flexibility. My goal is to do a full bridge by the end of the year! Although I still can't even get my head off the ground :(
