The NYT times has published a detailed description on how the decision to attack Iran was made and who argued what, including General Caine. I always wonder where they get these detailed informations from, but they somehow get it.
All intelligence services had already pointed out in their analysis how futile the attack would be and how difficult Hormuz is. It is fair to say Trump goes by his “guts” and no in the cabinet is willing to talk him out of it.
I read articles quoting the NYT article but could not read this link as it is behind a paywall.
I believe anyone with an average intelligence level can see immediately how impossible it is to defend against Iranian attacks.
The UAE/Oman side of the Strait is a peninsula. If they were to have beeen the rogue states, it would be somewhat easier to invade and control the peninsula. Its a small strip of land with limited access from the land behind it.
The Iran side, otoh, is impossible to control. A military force would have to invade the entire coastal region near the Strait, control it and defend it from attacks from the entire vast country behind it.
By contrast, Iran can attack from anywhere at the coast or even a longer distance inland and reach any target passing through.
I am certain that many previous US presidents considered an attack and decided not to as they trusted their own intelligence assessments.
