There are 5 congressional districts in south Florida represented by Cuban and Venezuelan American Republicans. Three of those districts would have been lost to Democrats if nothing happened. They may still be lost to Democrats anyway but that has never stopped anyone in the political sphere from launching a "Hail Mary" pass.
Colombia has presidential elections in May 2026. The current president, Gustavo Petro, cannot run again. Also, the Colombian congress has blocked everything Petro has tried to do.Trump said in a press conference that "Colombia is next". He also said that Mexico could be bombed. With latest Trump videos I always wonder if it's true or AI fake, can't distinguish it anymore.
The Colombian president seems a bit safer in his capital Bogota than Maduro was in Caracas. For flying to Bogota the US helicopters would need to fly about 500 km over Colombian land which poses much more risk than seaside Caracas. But that might be just an interesting challenge for US military planners.
Venezuelan is not Ukraine and US is not Russia. Only reason Trump can pull this off is because USA has spend more on its defence than the next 9 countries combined. For decades. So Trump has luxury of ordering such an overwhelming military superiority to takes out weaker nations (no we defense, no modern arms to confront USA etc.). Remember how USA steamrolled Saddam twice and he had an army that knew the USA was coming.from the conversation between Face the Nation moderator Margaret Brennan and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, we can deduce that the United States' capture of Nicolas Maduro could destabilize the Venezuelan government and cause its gradual collapse without Maduro as head of state, and overthrowing Chavismo in the next election, however, thats what Joe Biden said about the war in Ukraine: "sanctions do not seek an immediate effect, they will weaken Russia in the long term" it seems, however, that the Russian economy is stronger without the trade with Europe....Trump said: "a second military attack on Venezuela is on the table" the option of occupying Venezuela in the short term is viable for the United States, remember that the U.S. has a strong military presence in Colombia with access to military bases, air bases, naval bases, and army bases....in my opinion, with a destabilized Venezuela, the United States could occupy the country in the short term, even so, with allies like Russia and China, Venezuela could become the United States' Ukraine....take care all

Russia and China don’t have means to project power thousands of miles away like USA does. There are no USA troops on the ground in Venezuela as we speak. For China or Russia to cause pain to the USA they will have to fund and arms proxies who are fighting the USA. There are no such proxies and no USA troops on ground to be targets (like in Iraq or Afghanistan). Unless the country breaks into civil war with different factions backed by different countries. That will harm already crippled oil exports but won’t harm the USA.
So I don’t see Venezuela becoming USA’s Ukraine. Ukraine is literally bleeding Russia and Ukraine has support of a lot of economically powerful countries who also have some of the best arms.
It is natural for those who suffered to rejoice the removal of despot like Maduro. That doesn’t mean what will follow will be all roses. For all we know this might instigate something worse (like a civil war) or another right wing dictator.
The worst hard to Trump and republicans may be domestic. A large section of MAGA itself is not going to like this. They might lose more as a result in midterms (short term) and the next presidential election.
I can recall someone political analysis that with Trump now heading into being lame duck, only way for him seek attention and spotlight is by adventures in foreign affairs where USA presidents have a lot of leeway. That is his way of staying relevant in the lame duck years.
The larger effect is that each major power will get away with might is right in its sphere of influence. This was always the case. The intervening period of post World War II of “international rules and rule based order” was a veneer that gave pretense of equality. Yet USA did what it wanted to do (the list is too long) and USSR did what it wanted to (Afghanistan, crushing protests in Eastern Europe or Warsaw pact countries). China was too weak to throw its weight around in the neighborhood, like it is doing now. All powerful countries always practice double standards. USA during Cold War indulged in regime changes when it didn’t like results of democratic elections and supported dictators that were despots as it suited its purpose. Similarly with USSR but it wasn’t preaching virtues of democracy.relax, count to 10we all know here that Venezuela is not Ukraine, no one said that it was, nor that Venezuela is Vietnam....the only way i see Russia and China helping Venezuela on the battlefield on a possible war with the U.S. is with defensive weapons which will only prolong the war, even so, that cant impede the United States from occupying Venezuela....about the Russian Ukrainian war, remember that Ukraine have a border with Poland where NATO has a strong military presence, Venezuela is not Vietnam nor North Korea where Russia and China fought proxy wars, remember that Russia and China have borders with North Korea and China with Vietnam, but not with Venezuela....about the war with Iraq, remember that the United States buildup militarily in Saudi Arabia for a couple of months, so Saddam knew that the U.S.A. was comming....and you got this right, there are no U.S.A. troops on the ground in Venezuela
Trump argues that Venezuela is US backyard and he wants to protect US from drugs, but if coffins with dead US soldiers start coming in and billions are spent again in exterior countries republicans will lose lots of MAGA voters (by not going to vote next election). He's not going to run again but if his voters stop loving him that will feel terrible for him.
Attention seeking is probably an important point and the main reason for his greenland obsession. I guess some governments in other countries have already employed professional help from psychologists to help them dealing with him.I can recall someone political analysis that with Trump now heading into being lame duck, only way for him seek attention and spotlight is by adventures in foreign affairs where USA presidents have a lot of leeway. I dot know why a guy with raging coke heads for supporters and friends who use dto hold parties with lots of coke, who is also in co trol of a government agency that deals drugs (cia) is using drugs as an excuse. Hollywood and the music business in usa are coke fueled.Trump argues that Venezuela is US backyard and he wants to protect US from drugs, but if coffins with dead US soldiers start coming in and billions are spent again in exterior countries republicans will lose lots of MAGA voters (by not going to vote next election). U.s.a just wants the oil so they can tarrif the other local 3rd world countries into submission.
The issue I have is with bombing. The conversation is so nonchalant here about it.
If you have a criminal that the feds want in your city.. let's say San Francisco. If it is okay to bomb carcass (how many civilians got injured?) Then it is okay to bomb san Fran.
Maybe some hollywood screenwriter developed this story in the past but it got rejected as too unbelievable.Right, was thinking this after they started taking out the "drug boats". We have intelligence that 123 Main Street is a drug house so we just launch a cruise missile at it?
There are no US troops in Colombia. There have never ever been any uniformed US personnel in Colombia. Never ever since Colombia became independent in 1820 (or was it 1821?)remember that the U.S. has a strong military presence in Colombia with access to military bases, air bases, naval bases, and army bases....
China is the "dark horse" in this situation. They are using economic control to extract power and influence for their interests. It is working so far. So may countries in Africa and Asia are deep in debt to China. Less so in Latin America but China is very powerful there also. There is a countermovement is some of these countries but their options are limited because the US and the EU are just as bad albeit with the veneer of promoting fair trade and executing the exact opposite.China was too weak to throw its weight around in the neighborhood, like it is doing now.
OOPs. I should delete this. Completely wrong. There are no US troops in Colombia. There have never ever been any uniformed US personnel in Colombia. Never ever since Colombia became independent in 1820 (or was it 1821?)
There have been US DEA agents and support staff in Colombia but they do not wear military uniforms there. That would be fatal. They would be sitting ducks.
It cost as little as $50 to hire an assassin in Colombia*. They ride up in a motorcycle. They may or may not shoot straight. They may or may not have good aim or good bullets. What they do have for sure is the element of surprise. There have been many many cases where medical malpractice issues were resolved like this. The surgeon ended up dead. Other common situations are business disputes where one side is gaining their funds through illegal means. In Colombia one is very careful not to display or disclose who you are and what you do.
*The professional assassins who never get caught cost a lot more than that.
**Btw all of the guns come from the US, just like in Mexico, and everywhere else in Latin America. The guns enter legally by way of purchases by "security firms" that are actually covers for other illegal organizations.

The US bases are in the coca growing regions. Presumably to protect the supply of drugs to the US.
