The best Puerto Rican salsa tracks - your suggestions please

You may dislike bananas because you don't like the taste but It's crazy to dislike bananas for not being an orange. Both fruit are nice in their own way, although I prefer Bananas.

Anyone with any knowledge of fruit or food in general knows that oranges are infinitely superior to bananas. In fact, if you prefer bananas you must be an IDIOT.

It's a great song.

This might have been mentioned elsewhere in the forum, but just in case, here's the original version from Son 14

LOL, Dude it's all Puerto Rican "AFRO CUBAN-MUSIC (with some picante sauce)"on this thread, but point taken !!! If I am not mistaken this was Adalberto Alvarez's first band.!!! See you on the weekend!!

lol, actually I only pointed it out to share my excitement of discovering the original a few days ago by chance. I thought it was an interesting coincidence. (let's not assume every post I make is me pushing an argument for Son Cubano)

Anyways, not to derail the thread, here's one of my favorite songs from PR Gilberto Santa Rosa:

If you want swing from Willie Rosario then this:

Doesn't really get going until 2:55 so give it a full listen!

@the you like the track, so what parts of the music do you like? (people can probably recommend some tracks from your answer). Also what do you think of the dancing? Matches the music well?

One thing I like is that the spanish is't to difficult. Mine is't that good but I can understand what the song is about. I like how the song starts relaxt and picks up stream as it goes on. The part with the bell halfway is nice.
What I like about the dancing is the creative use of holds like pulling back at the waist or letting her walk into you and holding her wit two arms throwing her arms that kind of thing that may be fun to try in my own dancing. During the conga solo using his head that is something you find in Cuban folkloristic dancing . Also the use of the breaks in dancing that is clever and something a casino danser does not even consider in general I think. But there are probably a lot of video's with examples that are going to prove me wrong on that point.

Interestingly, that's what people say about Timba who don't understand it.

As someone who loves all kind of Salsa music, including Timba, I think you're approaching this kind of Salsa from the wrong perspective. You're approaching it from a direct comparison with Timba and finding it lacking in thick layers of complex rhythms (that wall of sound some people who don't like Timba complain about) and the same kind of variations (gears) that you like in Timba. Timba's structure is quite different from Salsa.

Instead try to find a (non-Timba) Salsa track you like and focus on the positives. The aspects you like about it, whether it's the piano riff, the melody, a nice bit of Conga or whatever. Tracks you like tend to grow on you with time.

I would suggest listening to Colombian salsa, as that has the same structure as NY/PR salsa but often with a more heavy use of conga similar to Timba. Back in 2003 Colombian salsa was my bridge from NY/PR salsa to Timba.

You may dislike bananas because you don't like the taste but It's crazy to dislike bananas for not being an orange. Both fruit are nice in their own way, although I prefer Bananas. Gaining a taste for something new takes time and happens little by little as you listen to new tracks.

Helps if you also don't picture yourself dancing Casino to it as it won't fit right. Find some video of cross-body dancers you like who are musical and learn the music through them. Dancing and music go hand in hand.

Also sounds like the selection of Timba you like is also fairly limited at the moment. Expanding horizons is good whatever style you like. Have you tried Suave Tumbao, Calle Real, Havana D'Primera and NG La Banda?
Yes of course I like Havana D'Primera. Who doesn't ;-)

That would be also a very nice version if the sound quality was better. And a bit of a surprise to me. So maybe I just liked it because I recognised something Cuban?

The songs I like best are the ones that sound like son montuno. Stuff like azuquita pa'l café, arroz con habichuela

oh here's one I used to like in the days before I got into timba. I forgot about this song and suddenly it came back into my head. Not PR i suppose but not timba either LOL

as I recall I used to like this one as well but this is NY right?

Wow - I've never heard that version of the song before, or seen that clip of Terry dancing to it - awesome!!!
:dancingbanana:

Absolute killer track, and inspiring dancing!
(Although I got the impression that his partner was feeling a little abandoned and disengaged during the parts he really got carried away in...)
