Texas Salsa Congress in March Rollcall...

Is anyone going? Or, have you ever been? The website is: http://www.txsalsacongress.com. Also, do you know if Houston is generally on2 or on1?

Houston is generally On1 but there are several significant dancers that can and do dance On2, I might be going to the Texas Salsa Congress as well, but I've never been.

Judging from the roster, there will be a lot of On2. http://www.houstonsalsacongress.com/workshops.php

Houston Salsa Congress is different than the Texas Salsa Congress :), Houston Salsa Congress happens this month, while the Texas Salsa Congress (both being held in Houston mind you) happens in March.

Yes, those are two separate events held here in Houston.

Houston is mostly an On1 city (especially in the clubs), but there are plenty of On2 dancers who show up at socials and congresses. Plus, Houston is regarded as the top Salsa city in Texas, so a bunch of the On2 dancers from other cities in Texas (Dallas, Austin, etc.) will come to Houston to get their "fix" during our Congresses.

I'll definitely attend at least one night of the Texas Salsa Congress in March -- either Friday or Saturday (or both). It would be great to see other SF members there! :D

I have a job prospect in Edinburg, TX. I could be out there by this time. How is the salsa scene near Edinburg? On2?

When I visited family in McAllen, just south of Edinburg, a few years ago I found folks dancing on2, on1 and rueda. So I think you'll be okay if you venture out to the socials down there.

I live in Houston.

I have never missed a Texas Salsa Congress once I got into Salsa, but I missed the last two because I was out of a job and couldn't afford it. But it's really amazing. Back when I went it was THE salsa event of the year in Houston, and Houston has a very active Salsa community with a lot of great events throughout the year. It should be a great event, although the Houston community has really gone out of their way this past year to hype up the Houston Salsa Congress. The premier dance studio is heavily involved in THAT one and they pretty much drive the Houston salsa community so it wouldn't surprise me if this year the Houston Salsa Congress is even better than the Texas one.

Anyway, it should be great. It's held in one of the hotels in The Galleria every year. The Galleria is the first shopping mall in the world to go by that name. It's a great mall with some stores you'll only find in New York, Paris, and Milan. That makes the Texas Salsa Congress somewhat of a higher class event than your typical run of the mill congress at a dance studio.

Yes, Houston is primarily an 0n1 town but the people you will want to dance with, the elite of Houston, all prefer to dance NY on2. In fact I hear that dance studio I mentioned above is now starting to teach a lot of on2 style dancing. So who knows? Maybe Houston will start to shift to an on2 town. That's fine with me! So you'll have no problem finding a lot of on2 dancers. Generally here in Houston at events like congresses you have to give the peace sign to ask if they can dance on2. haha.

Looking forward to meeting some of the SF people and to visiting Houston again---it's been YEARS since I have been there (and the last time I was there I hadn't "met" salsa yet;))!!!

Nice. :D

So, which night(s) will you be attending the Texas Salsa Congress? (I guess you can post your answer in RugKutta's "Roll Call" thread.... )

I believe I will be coming in that Thursday and leaving the following Monday. I am looking to book my flight this week :-).

Hey everybody.....any more updates on attendance?

It turns out that I'll have a 3-night pass for the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the Congress. 8) So, chime in if there's any interest in a SF meetup during the event!

I arrive on Thursday afternoon. Do you have any inside info on the party for that night? It still says TBA on the website.

I look forward to meeting and dancing with (since it seems to me and the guys-lol) everyone that's going :-)!!!

Is there a big buzz in the area about attendance?

I don't know about the Thursday party, and I'm as surprised as you are that the website hasn't been updated to reflect it. My guess is that it will be at a place called "The Horn" -- since that venue has an excellent live band, a nice dance floor, and is just a few minutes away from the hotel sponsoring the Congress. There's a decent chance that I'll run into the TSC organizer tonight and, if I do, I'll try to remember to ask her about the Thursday festivities.

I haven't been going out as much lately, so I also don't know about any local "buzz" for the TSC. Based on recent experience, the TSC tends to have more out-of-towners and fewer locals in comparison to the Houston Salsa Congress. I think that's a function of cost, since the TSC is at a fancier hotel and admission is a few dollars more per night. For people who are making the investment and coming from out of town, a $15 or $20 difference in the price of a full pass probably doesn't make much difference. But, for locals, a difference of $5 or $10 per night is a bigger mental hurdle to cross. In any case, I did notice that a LOT of performing groups are scheduled, so even just the people attending as part of dance groups will automatically provide a bunch of potential dance partners....

Well, I didn't even have to wait until tonight, since I just got an e-mail from the organizer. The Thursday "Kick Off Party" will be at the House of Blues in downtown Houston.

(But "The Horn" should still be a decent alternative.)

I was just logging in to announce the same thing-my friend who's DJ-ing for the majority of the Congress just sent me an email last night about it too. Which place is closer to the hotel? It looks like HOB is free for ladies before 10:30- so maybe I could do that first, then come to Horn as a back-up. Are they far from eachother?

Also, do you know how far IAH airport is from Galleria? I am going to take the bus from there to the hotel/ I think it might be 2 buses...

What's the plan for a SF meetup? Are you on Facebook too?

The Horn will be closest to the hotel/Galleria area. HoB and The Horn are sort of far from each other. The live band that plays at The Horn is definitely the best in town. The Horn isn't expensive either, it's $5 for parking (you can generally get free parking if you come by 9:45 or so), and $5 cover. Also IAH is on the opposite side of town from the Galleria area so make good arrangements ahead of time for sure.
