Son Montuno
I'm still working on the Team Cuba documentary. I've reached the point where I need help from a Cuban to get some of the stuff El Tosco and Adalberto are saying. So as I wait for someone to have an hour or so to sit with me, I am thinking about other aspects.
I started by translating the songs as well, but I'm beginning to wonder if I should just subtitle them in Spanish. Some stuff is OK to translate, other stuff sounds goofy and the there are thinks like "tenemos la sartén por el mango" that I just really don't know quite what to do with. Or other typical Cuban phrases such as "el que no tiene de Congo tiene de Carabalí" which I could translate but still people aren't necessarily going to understand that the point of this phrase is to say "all Cubans have some African in them". Just like the line from the theme song where they say "rubios con ojos claros que no son blancos esos son jabao". I mean what is the word for jabao in English? A person who looks white but has African ancestry.
So do you think it's worth it to do the best I can with some sort of translation or to just transcribe the songs in Spanish and only translate the interviews? I'm going to leave the Yoruba parts in Yoruba.
