Strictly Come Dancing 2009

Half the contestants will be doing a salsa this Saturday.

In anticipation there was a group salsa performance on the show just gone (3rd Oct) – with Susana Montero, Shelly Cook, Iniaki Fernadez and three others who I didn’t recognise (sorry) – can’t find a video yet, but will post a link when I do.

Fun competition this year – interesting that the current favourite apparently took private salsa classes with his g/f before being named as a contestant!

Great. I just read about this on Shelley's Facebook wall and was going to ask if anyone got it on video - looking forward to seeing the vid! :)

Just watched it. Is it me or did they mess up a couple of times? Very fast and difficult routine and live TV - I would not be surprised with so much pressure.

I would have prefered to see only one couple dancing in their own style but I guess they were asked to do a group dance.

richard marcel, lisa w and didnt recognise the other guy though i was told his name....oopsie, sorry!

yeah, they were asked do a group routine and put in loads of lifts/drops/dips then given practically zero rehearsal time. i dont know if anyone's every danced on TV - it's the seventh circle of hell. they keep you standing around for 10+ hours herding you around the place, so you dont even get to enjoy your boredom/cramp in comfort, then shout tons of confusing instructions and set up the music so that you hear it at a different time to the screening time. i thought they performed the heck out of it, given the circumstances.

Hmmm I hope this doesn't mean that we'll never get to see real salsa dancers on Strictly any more :(

let's hope not - that's the first real salsa dancing i've ever seen on that kind of show (the routine's on susana's facebook page for those who havent seen it yet).

i thought they did really well under tremendous pressure. ballroom afficionados are never going to like street salsa...i would have commented on that digital spy forum, but you have to register...the couple they were so keen to have back arent salsa dancers at all. i dont care how many ruffles you put in your sleeves, dont make you a salsero... ;)

Hopefully, the criticism will mean fewer mistakes next time, rather than a return to the bad old days.

It annoys me that those twunts on Digital Spy are having a go at Shelley.
It annoys me even more that they are not entirely wrong in this particular, unfortunate instance.

i thought the piece as a whole would have benefitted from more time to polish it, but i thought shelley held up well. i wondered whether the twunts (great word, Wes!) had a go at her in particular because she's the most 'ballroom' in style, therefore closer to what they know...?

i thought susana rocked the house, as usual - what a pro! that woman is just a born performer! i can't wait to see the premier of her solo-show (and i wont mention where she'll be doing the world premier, for fear of seeming to market a certain event. ;)) seriously, i'm dying to see her solo - she's so compelling that it'll be great to be able to watch her with full attention.

Why did they have to choose such a fast song? The band got messy at about 2mins and were struggling to stay together. The comments on the digitalspy forum were painful to read and if they knew what these guys could do given some sensibly paced music they'd be complaining about the music choice rather than the dancing.

It was ok I guess but once again the music was weak link.

On a more positive note, Brian's salsa routine for this week looks promising. :)

By the way who are these salsa experts who were on It Takes Two yesterday - Chris Marques and Jaci Spencer? Never heard of them and they are supposed to be salsa champions of some sort... Does anybody know them? On their website I saw a lot of latin and ballroom but not much salsa.

Edit: Apparently "Jaclyn and Chris claim they can teach anyone to Salsa in 30 minutes." I've been wasting my time with the wrong teachers... :)

After reading how the performance was panned on the digitalspy forum I was expecting very sloppy performance. Now I am wondering why those guys were talking like sky had fallen. The performance above isn't all that bad and I didn't see any horrendous slip ups.

Not surprising given they come from a ballroom/latin background...

I think they won a championship back in 2002. Don't know which championship - I heard their names I think in 2003/4 and also thought "who?". I remember there were a few salsa competitions around in the UK already (anyone here remember the Tropicana salsa championship? ;)), I think UKA (a ballroom organisation - the one that does "salsa medal tests") ran one too so maybe that's the one they entered, or some other ballroom-based salsa championship?

They performed at the UK congress in 2006 as World Champions. Junior and Emily came on after them and blew their performance out of the water, IMHO. But of course it's a matter of different styles and taste.

30 minutes! Salsa must be the easiest dance in the world! I think I had the beginnings of the basic step by then.

That's nothing! Last weekend I taught a drunk girl to salsa in 2 minutes! uh, that doesn't sound right.
