Strengthening the Core

Dancing is as much physical training as anything else, and while I do my own regiment of stuff I don't have faith that I'm covering all the bases. Anyone have any videos or recommended exercises for strengthening the core in particular. Videos of stretching exercises or yoga-like stuff is what I'm looking for. There are tons of videos on youtube, but I really don't want to waste my time practicing something that won't be as effective.

maybe this would be better for the videoclip section?

I got a Pilates dvd, that I have yet to unwrap, it is supposed to be specifically for core strength. I will take a look at it and let you know. There is also a place around the village ( lower NYC) that has very good yoga classes, is donation based so it be quite cheap to go, I thought it provide some great workout for core.

this is particular exercise that I always think gives me at least temporary feel of strength in my lower back ( crunches will do it for stomach, but I feel is very localized and does hit all the other core muscles)

here is a link to a demo ( I don’t use a bar, just my weight for now)

My yoga instructor told me that core differs from one person to another. And that what might work for a certain person, does not mandatorly work for another. Depending on your stats(Height, weight, length of torso, etc) the core workout would differ.

Take a few provate yoga classes. You will feel immediate difference. I also recommend Wii Fit.

Another option is Mixed Martial Arts.

@lolita...oh wow, I'll look into that. thanks

Hey Lolita,

Have you actually used Wii Fit and seen benefits? Or do you play the games mostly, and use some of the Fit provisions as as aside? :) :) :) Just curious...

Makossa dear,
Ever since I got the Fit. I have been HOOKED. Yoga is very challenging, hoolahoop is defo a great workout for the torso/waist area. Everything is just great.

I have seen a difference to say, At least I stopped playing Madden and Super Mario carts!

This thread may be healpful http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?t=4179&highlight=strength

I was thinking of something more like this:

That's really good stuff. I have a subscription to Men's Fitness, which lists these types of exercises. I also have a few books on core training. I was doing bikram yoga awhile ago as well.

I love to train, but like others expressed in that thread I pointed you to - sometimes you just don't have the time and energy after dancing and practicing salsa. I think to really be hardcore you have to do what I think Bala pointed out and eat right, get plenty of rest and maintain and strengthen your body, which means you have to somehow find the time.

The thing I like about the videos you pointed out is the fact that you can do this stuff at home, which saves time. I think jumping rope is also good. Whatever you do, even sitting, you should engage your core and tighten your abs.

I tend to like more functional exercises, when possible. That is, exercises that mimic the activity you are training for. Again, sometimes you have to be careful because you can train so hard that you don't have the energy to dance or practice. It's especially challenging when you have a full time job. If you are also dancing 8 days a week like PC, then its really challenging.

it's the rest part that I'm going to have a tough time with. Discipline is one thing, but I don't get a ton of sleep especially on Tuesday nights and the weekends. I just need to get better about all of it...well i'm off to practice...

Core For Dancers

Visit this link for a safe core strengthening routine for dancers.

I have been teaching fitness for 20 years, dancing salsa for 12 years, and performing for eight years including lifts, tricks, dips and drops.

These exercises work, they stabalize the body and help anchor the arms and legs for show dancing.

I used to go to a pilates studio weekly when I was living in Edinburgh. Now I go to a local gym 2-3 times a week, where I got an instructor to make up a programme specifically for bulding core strength. The result is quite visible now, and the stronger core has definitely improved my dancing.

There are lots of pilates DVDs which show mat workout moves you can do without equipment.

Also, I've got a New York City Ballet workout DVD (vol 1 I think), which contains some good core-strengthening exercises. I really should give it another try...

Hi SalsaTO, ...great to have another cabaret dancer on board. Trade you one of your lifts for one of my daughter's lifts. LOL
Too bad you aren't in L.A. You would love lifting her. 5' 1 1/2", 86lbs. If you ever get to L.A....let me know. I'll get some privates from you. (Though, she may know most of your lifts).
She has learned a lot of her lifts from ADS...but, she has another lifts trainer that does a lot of theatre arts lifts.

Added: ...just got done looking at your pics. Please invite me to your next samba on dundas and chocolate pleasure party event.

I am very tempted to jump into this. Will definitely explore this too.

<< - working on muscle building (not toning, not weight loss), so thats my "core" strengthening.

Worked on a bunch of leg-muscle building exercises - to help with dips and balance(with partner)

is it possible to post a video describing what you're doing...maybe at least a verible description?

Heh, I typically just try to lift as heavy as possible, yet maintain an 8 rep, 3 set - routine :)
And if time permits, 2 days a week for upperbody, and 1 day a week for lower.

Of course, this is a new-years resolution I've had for the last 3 years :P

Hopefully, I manage to stick with it this year :)
