Spin technique, punch with elbow ?

I was talking to this instructor about spin and he suggested punching with the elbow.

ex. standing feet together,
left foot goes in front to the side of the right foot
start turning to right, and then basically half way in the turn, pretend you are going to elbow someone and just let the force go to the right elbow.

I was very surprise about this technique, it did help my spins for sure, it was good way to bring the power to my upper body rather than cheat and push with the foot, also it seem to center my body so I am not bobbling.

that been said I am worry because this technique seems highly dangerous, can you imagine if --because of using this technique aid -- someday you end up actually doing it in a club, and someone gets in the path of that elbow. that is bound to cause some serious. I can't deny the benefits -- albeit maybe temporary on my spins-- but in the long run I wonder what effect it will have

What do you all think ?

hi PC,
i had a similar discussion with my instructor and he asked me to keep the hands below chest level.this is to avoid hitting ur partner or someone who comes in the way.The other technique is to use ur shoulders instead of your elbow to make that punch

I just have one question:
Let us say that "punching" with the elbow does get you the necessary amount of power to get you around. But...
How do you stop said elbow, or your now rapidly spinning body anyways?

using ur left foot as a brake if ur spinning to the right or vice versa...will this help?

No can do. If I turned from a left-right left move my next step must be with the right foot. Besides, using any feet will stop my lower body only. What about that flying elbow?
 
Edie says the break is bending the knees, but I have to admit that I personally am not happy when punching spins, whether with fist or elbow....I don't feel properly controlled.
 
Don't actually elbow with your elbows out to the side, such that anything will get ploughed through on the way. Instead have your elbows pointed down by your sides. In other words

instead of

back front

In effect you may think "elbows" but you're initiating by rotating through the shoulders while keeping your elbows down. The first method will be easier to keep your upper body as one block, with your elbows really out to the side easy to dissociate upper and lower torso. Ergo, no flying elbow.

Hard to write, easier to demonstrate :D
