song please

The name of the Song is "Vete pa'lla", there are a lot of versions of this one the most popular being the one by The New Swing Sextet but as far as I know there are also versions by Mon Carillo, Orquesta Sensacion and Los Magos del Swing...I'll try checking this one when I'm at Home...

Saludos

btw, I think think this particular version is sort of... not good :-)
Listen to the track by NSS, you might end up liking it even more - it's on "monkey see monkey do" and on "Explosive New Swing Sextett" and is called Vente Pa Ya (just in case you try to google it)

Btw, why? I'd have thought "vete" would be the correct form and pa'lla is short for para alla?

Hi!

The version in the clip is by Mon Carrillo from his album on Bambuco records where it is correctly named Vete Pa'lla. The original is by George Rodriguez and The New Swing Sextet, one of my fav tracks ever. I love the original version but the Mon Carrillo version came as a breath of fresh air for me.

I really liked how Mon Carrillo did a cover version but still added flavour of his own to it. I'm curious to know what you didn't like about this version? I know the sound quality on such a clip doesn't make it the best way to listen to it.

Hope this helps,

Well, now that you say it... :-)
I tend to be a little conservative with my taste in music, and whenever I hear a cover version where the phrasing is a little different from the original I dislike it most of the time. (and my allergy even severely aggravated after hearing all those Hector Lavoe covers from "El Cantante") However, in this case I gave it another try (or two) - and well, you're right - there's nothing not to like about it!
I guess the quality of the clip and dj's yelling in the background (I even mistook one of them for part of the song the first time) were some of the reasons I didn't like it so much.

Thank you for filling in, Guachi!

@ desconocida

Oh, I absolutely agree about cover songs of El Cantante and most of these "tribute to" covers. They are usually weaker and watered down versions of the original.

But I'm not against covers in general, some are really good and add new flavor to a great song. I think I'm more in favor of covers of great but less known tunes. It is just impossible to add anything to El Cantante these days...

For example I like Arsenio Rodriguez original Fuego en El 23 but I love Sonora Poncena's version and if they didn't do a cover of this song we would never have had this song in the way we do now! By the way they added a lot of flavor and made it their own song.

And I _do_ actually love Ruben Blades' version of El Cantante, after all he wrote the song so it is in some ways "his" and also it is significantly different than Hector's version (and shorter!).

@ Guachi Guaro:

Well, saying I'm absolutely against covers would be just not correct, especially taking into consideration that half of the time I might not even know which is the original and which the cover :-) Sad, but true... On the other hand I'm a huge fan of Ray Perez who's done plenty of covers (love, love his "Rio Manzanares") and the original "Doce Cascabeles" is an old folk song from what I know, as well, right?
So, let's just say I'm prejudiced against covers but I like and respect them whenever they are done in a artistic and original way - which you said beautifully as "adding flavor and making it your own song"

Btw, of course I've noticed you know them all :-) so I wanted to ask you whether you heard Orquesta Zodiac's "Se formo la rumbantela"? I used to like this song and I enjoy a lot of OZ's stuff, so this might be interesting for me. Maybe you can give me some feedback on that one since I didn't have a chance to preview it anywhere?
Sorry for being OT!

It didnt " move " me at all.. just sounded pretty bog standard salsa.. I know, music is very subjective ( .. and,WHY do some Js insist on hearing their own voice ?? )

@ Desconocida:

I've been thinking of this Se Formo La Rumbantela version by Orq Zodiac. It was not on an of the four albums I have from them from the 70s, nor on any of the later CD/LPs I have, though I may be missing some of their stuff from the 80s.

I also did some googling for this and found no references to albums where this could appear on. So I really can't help much here I'm afraid.

I _do_ hope a version exists as I love this song too in most versions, so I hope someone else can confirm this?

Darn, I don't remember where I've seen it! I only remember stumbling across it when I tried to find out who actually wrote "La Runidera" and what year it is from (it sounded so much "older" to me than the album it was on).
I'll keep on trying and if I succeed I'll just pm it to you, if you don't mind. I think to remember it was on some sampler, not on an actual album... So maybe it just was straight up wrong like it happens sometimes on samplers :-/
