I have noticed cameramen usually focus on one couple and the couple become aware and starts to show off which kills the most important part of the capture (natural dancing).

If I wanted to watch just one couple showing off, I would have watched their performance.
Why do not they capture the scene, how everyone else is enjoying/dancing, even the beginner dancers.

It's in people's nature to show off in a sport or activity where skill is involved.

I also know quite a few people who appreciate people taking videos of them because it gives them a memory to remember.

Skills are great when they come out naturally, it gives advanced dancers more ways to interpret the music.

When one is aware that others are watching and one has to dish out skillful moves, many times natural interpretations are lost. Its like writing a poem with known beautiful/hard words, it does not express the emotions well or write an article with a preset (long/hard) sentence construct in mind.

The purpose of art is to express the emotions/beauty and let others enjoy and build a communication that way. So its understandable for us to get carried away wanting to do more.

Sometimes those natural interpretations look ugly :)

If I know a camera is pointed at me, I will give more energy, try to keep a good frame and move with more purpose. The naturalness is still there, but with conscious effort to appear more polished. To me, this isn't a bad thing.

When I try to look polished I look like an absolute idiot. More so.

I do get disappointed when I see me in a dance video. It looks very ordinary. I am probably worse when I am aware of any camera actions.
