So you think you can dance

Hi again BrownSkin818...
:( Yes, I am aware of ADS's lack of popularity as a choreographer.
(I also still think he and Alien got shafted at the Mayan).
And I agree about his Mayan shaft. He's an awesome performer, though perhaps predictable.

Search youtube for W.C. Swing Championships and you will see that there is no way any of the dancers, with the exception of the Schwimmer kids could pull anything close as this, off on SYTYCD.
Ballroom dancer's included.
I've seen some great WCS clips, and I think some of the disco partnering on the show has actually been in the ballpark with WCS.

one more darn add: I don't remember seeing a decent waltz yet on SYTYCD,...One would think the waltz is easy (at least I would),....but doing it properly is a SOB, requiring years of training.
I think it was Allison and Ivan last season who did a gooooorgeous one, as well as Benji and Donyelle if I'm not mistaken. Other SYTYCD veterans can chime in if I'm attributing wrong.

Also, thankyou very much for your kind words about Missy on salseroweb.
Quite welcome! Find Missy a good partner and you've got yourself a future Emily (from Junior & Emily) on your hands!

Looking at your avatar, I remember you also,....you are a very excellent and obviously experienced dancer.
Aw, why thanks! And I didn't take you the wrong way at all. Just as a proud pop. :D

Sorry if I come of like a know-it-all, (I can't dance a lick), I am just an avid dance afficionado, but also I am a compulsive gabber.
I have a gf who's 19 (not sure how long she's been dancing, but she's quite advanced) and she goes out dancing all the time with her dad! It's the cutest thing! So maybe you should join Missy in a few lessons so she's not hogging all the fun! (Might help you de-stress too ;)) And it's okay... I think the moderators allow gabbing. *te he he*

In the UK we like to be different. Over here the shows are called "Strictly Come Dancing" = Dancing with the Stars (in every other country) and "Strictly Dance Fever"=So You Think You Can Dance. SDF only ran for two series. It's been replaced by an awful show called Dance X where they have to be able to sing as well as dance - training them for musicals I guess.

They're showing the US version of Dancing With The Stars over here at the moment - the series with Billy Ray Cyrus, Clyde Drexler and Heather "ex Mrs McCartney" Mills.

Hey, wait a minute, the UK was first and the Americans (and others) copied....

Yeah - in fact, Executive Producer/Head Judge Nigel Lythgowe and Hostess, Cat Deeley are both English. And the show has strong ties to Simon Fuller, who is also English.

I'm not disputing that. I'm just saying that "Dancing with the Stars" was a good enough title for every other country in the world (or their translation of it) but the UK had to be different - DWTS would have been a perfectly acceptable title over here (or even Brucie's DWTS :) ). Obviously, given that other countries probably didn't have an older show called Come Dancing would make the UK title meaningless when translated.

Can we argue about which country got the best professional dancers instead? :)

Only if we get to vote for it by phone. We've got many more tweenage (meaning 13-early twenties) girls than you!

Tj,
Alex can only do so much with the SYTYCD dancers. Most are not comfortable dancing in heels, they are not trained in latin styling, the partnered salsa (arm) moves are a new concept for them and they do not know how to execute rapid partnered turning. ...but the quick dancing in heels must be the most difficult for the dancers.
My 13 yr. old daughter with any of the many accomplished leads (that she has danced with) at the clubs would wow the audience with Alex's SYTYCD routines. (...of course, it's nothing you pros haven't seen, but I am sure Alex would have them do tougher material if he thought they could pull it off). ....some of the routines looked like Alex's intermediate class stuff. LOL
Alex has got a tough job....maybe when he gets Lacey we will see something special. (I was hoping Alex would get Lacey and Pasha...but that opportunity passed tonight).

..but I may be a bit biased. LOL

WOW, you are GORGEOUS!!! Love the smile!!!

Errrrrr, I mean welcome to the boards

:D :D :D :D :D :D

* edit :) That was what I wrote when I first saw the picture. The first one. Then I kept reading and realised oh my goodness that is your daughter. Before you get the shotgun, I only looked at the first picture where your daughter could have been older, but the 2nd picture she looks young.

Regardless, she is super cute and will light up many a dancefloor. You must be and should be very proud!!!

*meant respectfully and hopefully taken the same way

speaking of 'so you think you can dance', i dont know what episode (or even what season) i just saw in egypt, but can i please just say - WTF???

there was a 23-year-old guy called BJ Harris, who did the most amazing, innovative breakdance/popping....really great technically, great performance skills and charisma plus really fresh/creative. but the judges were like, "mm, ok, go through to the choreography round".

he's self-taught, so i thought he might flop there, but he was fine - and got booted out. whereas, at least 4 really pretty girls who were hopeless went through...:mad:

anyone else see it? what did you think...?

They only let 10 guys and 10 gals into the top 20, so some of it depends on the level of competition from the same gender. There was a lot of chatter about the guys being better than the gals in season 4.

That being said, the competition tends to favor generalists more than specialists. Have had other conversations about why contemporary/modern dancers tend to do better than ballroom/partner or hip hop/self taught dancers. They want you to be able to pick up choreography across many different styles (and quickly), so that's why they're choosy in a certain way.

The catch phrase for the winner is "America's Favorite Dancer" rather than "America's Best Dancer".

That being said, they had a great "dance-off" between two specialists last season: Phillip "Pacman" Chbeeb vs (oops I forgot his name, but his nickname is Mr. Fantastic). Quite fun to watch.

Up here in Canada we have SYTYCD Canada - So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

There is equal emphasis on partnerwork as well as solo work and the Canadian show is not as goofy and as contrived as the American show. I interviewed one of the Top 18. Drop by SalsaTO.ca to see it - Romina is a passionate salsa dancer! and she danced salsa on the show... Wednesday night there was a killer mambo (on2) routine to Tito Puente's "Mambo Gumbo!"

The general site is ctv. ca/ mini/ dance2008/ index. html

Just re-assemble the link to use it, as in remove the spaces... enjoy!
