SF Shines Edition 8 - Music Suggestions!

Son Montuno
So let's keep the momentum going and let's talk music!

So I'm going to kick us off. I'm not saying I've given this huge thought, but here we go:

Salsa:

Something I love to warm my classes up to, just a track that makes you want to dance.

Cha Cha:

Totally left field, and not something I expect to garner support, but might stimulate some discussion:

I still love it either way ;)

So let's throw up some suggestions chaps!

I'll no doubt be back with more when my sub-conscious has worked on it a little longer ;)

Ok I'll just keep this going for now!

So let's get more modern, but still with a great groove and plenty of musical space to play in:

Back to a more conventional choice for a Cha:

A great track, clearly, and Oscar has been much in discussion on the forums off and on lately ;)

Soooooo, you lot, muck in please ;)

There was music in the 1st vid ?

That S.W. song was played to death in the BR genre, and ACID also had a long run.. both useful for beginners classes, tho I do not use either.

Honestly put these up just to get started and thought it might generate chatter, but no :P

Acid is still a staple for my classes, the title track particularly of course, simply because it's so darn handy for letting new ears hear the orqesta breakdown properly.

Anyway Terence, are you going to recruit a friend with a camera/smart phone and throw down some shines for us this time? ;)

Chas for consideration..

Orq. Broadway.Quinta Guajira
Pete Rodriguez.... Aqui Estoy
LA Maxima..........Lapiz Y Papel

Salsa ........

Kenny Quintero...... The Morning After
Jesus Pagan........ Ritmos sabroso
El Combo Antilliano.. Bellas Cubanos
Bobby Rodriguez..........Sonero de Barrio

I did giggle !.. and, its a definite maybe..

Well if you get involved Terence, it will be a truly legendary edition!

So with that said I shall investigate your suggestions.

I expect more to come. I've been out of the dj booth for a year or more now, so my suggestions are old hat. I know what I like, but in forums populated by some of the finest dj's in the salsa world, and the most obsessed music nuts: I'm expecting to be blown away with songs I don't know, or only know in the passing as 'that awesome song that sounds like it's a Palmieri number, but I don't know for sure.

From the initial discussion it sounds like we'll be doing two songs again and it sounds like we don't want to do the usual classic salsa that has dominated the previous editions. So here are my suggestions: Los Van Van (as several people said they wanted a Cuban song and we may attract more members) and a song from a very new salsa band. Both have many musical variations and contrasts (softer parts, harder parts, singing, instrumental) so people can choose the part they like best for their shine.

1. Los Van Van -- La Bomba Soy Yo

This song really lets the lead singer, Mayito Rivera's amazing voice shine through. (That's him in the video pictures. He was Los Van Van's lead singer for 20 years. I had the good fortune of seeing him live in Havana in April) When he gets into the notes after 1:45, it gives me goosebumps!

2. El Timba y Fabio Gianni -- Linda Mujer

A few ideas here:

1. Franke Dante - Yo te seguiré

2. Barbaro Fines y Su Mayimbe - No me lastimes

3. Alexander Abreu y Havana de Primera - Me dicen Cuba

Well, if a Van Van or Havana D'Primera track gets chosen, I might be tempted to participate as well. . . Me Dicen Cuba is fabulous, as is La Bomba Soy Yo
