salsa vs Bachata

Right now I'm listening to mostly these 2. I love salsa a lot but love bachata even more because of the history of it. Bachata is a genre that fought to be where its at, it fought the bloody dictatorship of trujillo. Bachata and salsa are awesome along with merengue I don't listen any other genre that aren't those 3 lol

What do you think about the salsa dance vs bachata dance which one do you prefer?

Hey, check out my bachata series (see the links in my signature). I'm pretty politically astute and am very interested in Latin American politics, yet I had never even heard of Trujillo until I started researching bachata's history. What an amazing story!

Are you aware of the movie about the Mirabel sisters starring Michelle Rodriguez - Tropico de Sangre? I haven't actually watched it, because my Spanish is very poor, and there are no subtitles.

after reading the term "genre that fought" and checking out Salsa Bear's Bachata Page, I made a little research myself.

I may conclude that Bachata really survived for decades and has already reached a well deserved space in the Latin scenario not necessarily for political reasons. It won it's space by the talent of their precursors and today stars as Juan Luis Guerra, Milly Quesada, Frank Reyes, Anthony Santos, Teodoro Reyes, El Cieguito De Nagua, Aventura, Monchy & Alexandra, Luis Vargas, Blas Durán, Leonardo Paniagua and many more.

and yes, I can assure that the Bachata genre started firmly internationally since it was referred as Amargue.

btw, the first bachata I listened was Paniagua's "El Divorcio" in the late 80's. it was then described as "Amargue". loved the emphasis in the requinto as the lead instrument.

then in 1990 came Juan Luis Guerra's Bachata Rosa. As stated in Salsa Bear's article, it changed the name of the game to what it is now.

A friend of mine, a Dominican who grew up in DR in the 60's and 70's told me that if he was walking down the street back in those days and he heard Bachata playing on a radio and a group of guys hanging out on the corner that he would cross to the other side of the street.

Yea bachata history is crazy. However it is important to know that bachata does not only derives from bolero but also has merengue and son rythm in it too bachata evolved into something very different. Only thing bachata has from bolero now a days are the bongos and the style in which the bongos are played but the rythm is very different

I always prefer dancing Salsa over Bachata simply because the music just is much more intricate. There's a lot more things that you can accent when you dance Salsa. I will admit though, after meeting a certain someone, my desire to become a better Bachata dancer has risen with each dance! There's just something about that being able to dance nice & close and be sensual. Given the right person, Bachata can be an awesome dance too. In any case, I still will always love dancing Salsa more!

Im failing to see the"link " between the two.. are you speaking " musically "? ( the dance format bares no resemblance ).

Much of Bachata would fit a Danzon sequence very well... extrapolating that, to an open Box format, would be the beginnings of Bolero and Mambo ( the dance ) .
