Salsa Vacation Ultimate Destinations

Eating paella in Barcelona is like ordering Korean food in Tokyo.

You should have chosen some other city :D. Any food in Tokyo is generally very well made. Whether Italian or Korean or American burger.

P.S. - Quinto Quinta in Barcelona is reputed to have best paella outside of Valencia.

How did you get on?
Cali is really crazy for Salsa. You can listen it all the time. I would say more than 90% of the music played in the city is Salsa (or Timba or related). Everybody dances a little bit but generally, it's very simple. Very few people dance the fast Salsa Caleña. I was filmed several times even when I was dancing simply with the local girl I was going out with. I danced with two girls some casino, a German girl living and teaching Cuban style in Cali, and a Spanish girl. I miss the connection dancing like this. It only feels ok if you dance "cobado" with the girl.
During feria, I went to a lot of concerts, including super concierto in the local football stadium.

Similar to my takes on the city. Glad you had a good time!

I agree with Hawaii; I'd forgotten to mention it's a favorite vacation and dance spot for me. I love it for the hiking options, stunning volcanic landscape and cheap public transport, but dancing in Honolulu in my experiences there is great. The venues seem to change regularly (and tend to be downtown rather than Waikiki where most tourists stay; I tend to use a dirt cheap but very basic hostel a bus ride out of downtown) but it's always friendly and worthwhile.

I still haven't had a chance to go out dancing in Greece (often there on work so unable to) but it's become a home away from home for me in recent years. These days I'll check to see if I can get a flight via Athens if I'm heading somewhere in the region. Definitely recommend! Couldn't manage it for my upcoming trip, but will stop in Lisbon so I'll see what I can find ...
When were you Hawaii last?

When were you Hawaii last?
Before the pandemic. Last time I spent a week on Maui hiking, driving to Hana, a bit of surfing. I was devastated to see the fire destruction - Lahaina was such a lovely town. Then back to Oahu. Last time I danced in Honolulu was at a social in a Mexican restaurant high up in a tall building in Waikiki. Would like to get back and this time visit Kauai; would also love to go to the WSL event at Pipeline one year, especially if JJF is competing :).

I have fond memories of different socials in Honolulu. They were always very friendly and had dancers around my level (which is far from spectacular I’m afraid :)).

Hit me up next time you're going.

The February event is excellent for a sub 1000 person event and is the largest and most balanced for salsa/bachata/zouk with a surprising amount of NYC schools flying out every year for salsa. The hotel prices are also as low as $140 a night!
