Salsa open diary

Back from Riviera Latin Fest, I only did the first 3 days (mon -wed) and I think it was only really starting to get going when I left! Having a whole week I think is too much. I feel I missed most of it because of that, but I primary went for Havana D'Primera who was amazing. The location is amazing too, I think I made the best decision to go party pass only and enjoy the riviera in the day.

Despite HDP headlining the Cuban room was the smallest, but imho had a nicer vibe. I only really enjoyed the main room on the weds, the Tuesday socials were the worst, it was almost impossible to get a dance, but Wednesday I was asked a lot. Though they sud show the football on Tuesday and France lost so maybe that explains the vibe. England lost on weds so maybe that's why they French were in a better mood on weds

I have two regrets - not asking Terry for a dance and not getting a workshop pass to try out a bachata influence class both out of morbid curiosity.

Also my first experience of no free water, it really sucks especially in the south of France in summer.

The mambo bus is coming next week!

One can't say TheDanceHouse doesn't have ideas. Now they send the mambo bus on the road, making party each day in another city, thus connecting the Hamburg and Stuttgart Festival Weekends by making stops in between: Hamburg, Münster, Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg.

I'll be in both Hamburg and Stuttgart anyway. Didn't salsa the last two months, I hope I still got the groove.

Lol what?

This is cool but also biased. You Germans get all the fun.

But I guess if they're connecting festivals it makes sense.

Tried a new class in my city as a lead BC I've pretty much hit my limit here as a follower, and god there's a reason the level here is so low. No one has good basics, everyone is being pushed through combos far above their skill level. Not just one or two dancers, the level was wrong for about 90% of the class. Not calling out this class particularly, part of the issue is this is so common, not just in my city but everywhere. It really annoys me, it's just sad really.

Ok someone needs to do New York to San Francisco, an intercity disco.

If the instructor has narcissistic traits then it's all fine for him when he's the only one capable of doing the combo: he gets all the admiration from the ladies because he's so exceptional. You can't expect him to really want to change this.

I get a weekly newsletter from a salsa instructor and he repeatedly points out the problem of teaching combos instead of technique, and that the salsa scene needs to change this because many students are unhappy in this situation. Not unexpectedly recently he mentioned he got called out for criticizing collegues: if you dare to criticize your collegues you will face problems. Much easier to do just as the others do - students keep on suffering, but hey we always did it like this.

I’m doing the opposite. I’ve been learning how to follow. In a city that is lead dominant, learning how to follow actually allow me more time dancing. I think where I am, the good follows don’t go out social dancing too much, so when they do go out, they are being asked left and right. Finally building up confidence to ask leads to lead me more often now! Got to experience good vs bad lead. Valuable insights gained for sure, the leads whom I thought was good…didn’t feel too good…haha.

If only we could hook up the follower heavy scenes with the lead heavy scenes in some sort of exchange programme
