Salsa open diary

Why is that a nightmare?

It's a nightmare because I feel like an invalid.

Aging has given me renewed urgency to develop my athletic potential. I know I can't keep up with the young Instagram dancers (not just in Salsa but in any genre), but watching people my age and those 10-30 years older than me still doing amazing feats inspires me to keep moving more.

Not being able to move is one of my biggest fears. My subconscious knows this and knows how to push my buttons in dreams.

SALSAMANIA this Saturday and John John has to have a show -_-. I really wanted to go as SOS has an amazing space but I don't like venues that hold performances....

You will need to show your vaccination card. You can bring a screenshot of it if you have one but I just use the official NYS app which identifies it.

No idea what you look like though :p

That may be the surprise :)

There's only one performance? Should be over pretty quick then...

It takes a while for me to get back into transitioning from spectating to dancing if something interrupts my mojo in between.

But wait! Now it lists performances by SIX people :(

Depending on how it goes Sat, I may attend LVG Sunday but would have to leave early to attend meetings Monday morning..

Jimmy Anton is still running his thing at the same location as Salsamania but its Sunday. However, it looks to be the 16th and 30th (not sure if you will be around).

I'm moving my schedule around because I also wanted to try the Brooklyn Museum that Thursday but they canceled it :(

I wanted to go to the Taj on Mondays but Mondays are booked with meetings so I have to miss it until I can find a way to move those evening meetings :(

I'll be wearing red and black most likely ;)

6 performances :( Then again we can go to the side and chat during performances, it's the perfect chat time ;) (I usually dance nonstop otherwise)

I believe LVG is cancelled until further notice :( Got cancelled a few days ago apparently (it's off the calendar as well).

Yep I have my official vaccine certificate print-out just in case they want to see it, as well as my French app on my phone, which is the only thing we use in France, it's all digital (those US vaccine cards seem like the US is in the middle ages lol).

What do you do for work with so many meetings?

NYS uses the app (I don't like carrying papers).

John John's NYE social was a blast (no performances; majority Salsa) so when I read he was doing performances... feels bad man...

Gah, I saw LVG change too :(

I work in healthcare. In addition to meeting with clients, I provide supervision and consultation to various providers, consultation to different entities on policies, integration of GUI, EHR, telehealth, etc, etc, etc. I'm moving to grind it out and retire early by my 50s. The pandemic has really created a SNAFUBAR so the normal 9-5 with the speed of changes in healthcare is out the window (for now).

Yeah it's absolutely horrible to have to sit through a few performances in-between hours of dancing.. :p :wacky: #USproblems

Let me put this into perspective: here in France there's no dancing at all till who knows when. Zilch. Nada. Netherlands is in lockdown. Etc.

So... My empathy for your "performance issues" is rather low :p

That's what I was thinking about: I would be scared that they close everything when arriving in NYC...
Fingers crossed for your dancing plans...

Switzerland behaves different as always: there are three Salsa parties in the next four days.
My first world problem is wondering what I'm gonna do that day without party?

Yeah when I booked this trip in late November, who would have thought this would all explode a couple weeks later. I would have cancelled it but my tickets are not changeable, plus I have another trip linked to this one that I would also lose.

So...I will take what I can get. So far the salsa calendar still has dance events almost every night. The sad part is I was going to have reunions with friends in NYC and Boston who I haven't seen in several years, and now that is also up in the air, no idea which of them I will be able to see as many are testing positive etc.

So earlier today I went to take the required covid test before my flight to NYC tomorrow. I took the rapid test (antigen) and after the test they told me I could wait 15 minutes for the result and they'd give me the printout also to show at the airport. So 20 minutes later, the tester comes to me and says:

Are you vaccinated?
Me: Yes!
Do you have symptoms?
Me: No!
Well, unfortunately your test is positive...

At this point I almost have a heart attack, because this means I can't fly tomorrow.

Me (mind racing): But that's impossible! (I've been very careful the last week and had no close contact with anyone, other than brief shopping.)

She continues: The positive line was faint but visible, so you are maybe at the beginning or end of the infection.

Me: But that's impossible! (This conversation was all in French btw... "Mais ce n'est pas possible!") I explain that I've been at home the last week with no contacts other than brief shopping.

She insists it's definitely possible because of how contagious it is now, and offers to redo the test to verify. At this point I'm panicking and my mind is racing: is it possible that the Paris salsa weekend I went to 2+ weeks ago somehow gave me an asymptomatic infection that persisted until now so strongly that the antigen test was positive... (antigen tests only catch "true", contagious infections, so usually only around the first few days of symptoms.)

After a second traumatic test in which she really took her time to "make sure the result is clear", she goes to check my form and...that's not my name on the form. Turns out she had already run my test, had already entered the NEGATIVE result in the system correctly, but for some reason as I was the only person waiting around for the result, and another young woman had gotten tested right after me, she assumed I was her without checking my name first.

Anyway...it was a terrifying moment (not because of getting a positive result but because my whole US trip, plus the honeymoon trip linked to it, would have been totally lost)...I know there's a high chance to test positive in NYC but a positive test before I even leave would have been absolutely ridiculous...

Oh these types of mistakes are terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!! I keep reminding people, slow the F down, double check your work as incorrect results = delayed treatment for those with false negatives because you did not assign the values to the correct charts!!!!!!!!!!! In the US, even for the most routine labs, at every single step, they verify my name, DOB. Some say it out loud when they are entering my data. It takes a few extra minutes but holy crap!!! One thing that may help is to simply give your name and DOB (not guaruntee they still won't screw up). Glad it turned out OK though!!!

Being a "ghost in a shell" is a terrible fear.
Slow your roll before your shoulders fall off next? Then your shimmies look like the "Greasers" doing shoulder rolls in gang style. I see that "urgency" a lot resulting in people pushing themselves too hard and injuring instead.

I'm probably not in any danger of 'shoulders falling off' syndrome anytime soon lol.

The urgency for me doesn't involve pushing myself past my abilities and injuring myself. I am thinking more long-term planning and gradually building strength and athleticism. I don't subscribe to any program that guarantees results in 30days, 60days.. etc. I am past that stage in my life where I want to see quick results and I know my body too well to have unrealistic expectations.

Rather, I want to move well my entire life so my mindset is focused on consistent movement and injury prevention.
